Chile
The Republic of Chile is located on the South Pacific Coast of South America between Peru and Argentina. Chile is home to an estimated 16.4 million people. Its capital is Santiago..gif)
The Republic of Chile's Coat of Arms
Motto: "Por la Razon o la Fuerza" ("By Right or Might")
Chile declared its independence from Spain on February 12, 1818. The country has had a tumultuous political history. It was ruled by the wealthy classes who maintained colonial stratification and political control throughout the 19th century.
Although Chile also had a Civil War in 1891 which led to a greater balance of power between the presidency and the congress, the country's citizens have endured countless decades of oligarchy, and a series of dictatorships. It wasn't until 1970, when Salvador Allende became the leader in support of the people.
Mr. Allende was effective in his first year of office. Employment was up, millions of acres of land were redistributed to the poor, programs were established for the needs of the indigenous people of the country, and milk was provided free to all children.
Due to Chile's nationalization of U.S. owned corporations and mines, Richard Nixon influenced the international financial community to restrict economic credit with Chile. The CIA participated in activities that caused a destabilization in the country and caused the ultimate collapse of Allende's term in office which led to a military coup and Mr. Allende's demise.
Enter, General Augusto Pinochet Ugarte, Chile's most notorious and ruthless dictator. He ruled for nearly 17 years. Many Chileans fled the country, tens of thousands were detained and tortured, and countless were killed or completely disappeared, never to be heard from again.
Pinochet was finally voted out of office in 1988. There have been several Presidents since that time.
Chile is now considered a democratic state. * A special note, during the December, 2005 election there was a tie between two candidates which prompted a run-off election on January 15, 2006 and Michelle Bachelet became the first female president of Chile.

Chilean Culture, Traditions, People
During the time of the Spanish Conquistadors, the indigenous people of Chile were tortured, massacred, forced to be slaves, and their resources were stolen. There were many who died from the European illnesses brought to the people of Chile.
The Chilean culture was dominated by the colonial Spanish well into the 19th century. To a lesser degree there was also a French and English influence which persists in current times.
Chile also has an intriguing history of immigration by unexpected groups (e.g., Yugoslavian, German, Irish, and Italian). In more recent times it has acquired a Korean community and the largest Arab community outside of the Middle East colonized by Palestinians. Wikipedia
Chilean Spanish:
Although Spanish is the predominant language of the country, it is unlike the Spanish of other surrounding countries. Proficient and fluent Spanish speakers from other Latin American and Spanish based cultures have often found Chilean Spanish to be virtually unintelligible to their trained ear.
The Land of the Poets
Gabriela Mistral was the first Chilean female poet to win the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature in 1945.
More recently, Isabel Allende has won acclaim for her passionate, epic novels. Among her titles are: Ines of My Soul, Eva Luna, and House of the Spirits.
She has a new book due out in Fall 2007 entitled La Suma de los Dias

You may have heard of Pablo Neruda, Chile's most famous poet known the world over for his magnificent poetry. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971.
