Sarasota Opera staged La Traviata in Fall 2009

If you liked Moulin Rouge or Camille, then no doubt you fell for Parisian courtesan Violetta Verdi's La traviata sung by Lina Tetriani, whom audiences also cheered when she debuted in the role of Magda in Puccini's La rondine staged by Sarasota Opera in 2008.

Edgar Ernesto Ramirez returned to the Sarasota Opera House on the west coast of Florida, this time as Alfredo Germont and favorite baritone Marco Nistico also returned as Giorgio Germont.

Maestro Victor DeRenzi conducted La traviata twice before at Sarasota Opera, most recently in 1998, and brought an 11-year break plus a fresh approach to this new production.

"I've become much more interested in how the poetry of the text affects what the composer wrote and how the music is interpreted." -- Victor DeRenzi

The audience shouted bravas and bravos as Violetta abandoned pleasure and then gave up her true love.Sarasota Opera presented six performances of  Verdi's La traviata with opening night set on Friday, October 30, 2009 followed by additional dates on November 1, 3, 5, 8 and 11, 2009. The production marked the third time the Company staged the opera. The previous productions were seen in 1984 and in 1998.

All three productions count as part of Sarasota Opera's Verdi Cycle.

About La traviata

The Woman Who Strayed

La traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on the novel La dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas, fils, published in 1848. The title "La traviata" means literally The Woman Who Strayed, or perhaps more figuratively, The Fallen Woman. It was originally titled Violetta, after the main character.

Piave and Verdi wanted to follow Dumas in giving the opera a contemporary setting, but the authorities at La Fenice insisted that it be set in the past, "c. 1700". It was not until the 1880s that the composer and librettist's original wishes were carried out and "realistic" productions were staged. Verdi - La Traviata

Cotrubas · Domingo · Milnes · Bayerisches Staatsorchester · Carlos Kleiber

Only Callas among her starry rivals on disc can match Cotrubas's emotional and vocal mastery here. Domingo sings with ardor, and Milnes uses his beautiful voice to good effect as Germont. But it's Carlos Kleiber's show, and that enigmatic conductor leads the most energetic Traviata since Toscanini. Tempos are fast, but his sense of theatricality is unerring--this is one of those studio recordings that captures the sense of being at the opera house listening to one of those rare performances when everything clicks. --Dan Davis
