What Is Latte Art?

Latte means milk in italian language.
The way of pouring steamed milk into an espresso, resulting in beautiful designed patterns on the surface is called latte art.
There are different methods to achieve these patterns. Either in the way the steamed milk is poured into the espresso or in drawing the design after pouring the milk with a coffee stirrer.

Latte Art Styles

Latte Art StylesThe most common design you will find in latte art is the rosetta, which looks like a flower. It is done just by pouring the steamed milk into the espresso while holding the cup tilted into one direction. While he pours the milk from one side to another, the barista balances the cup and finally makes a strike through the poured pattern, resulting in the flower's stem.
But a lot of other design patterns are possible, such as hearts, animals, flowers, or just geometrical patterns. Some of them are as well just done with the style of pouring the steamed milk, others are designed with help of some kind of pin or coffee stirrer.

You would like to know the art of creating beautiful Rosettas?

Learn from Master Barista Phil Search, the director of training at the Seattle Barista Academy, in an easy way how to brew an espresso, to steam milk and how to create beautiful Rosettas, Hearts or Flowers.

Talking About Baristas

BaristaAs well as latte, the word barista comes from italian language and means bartender and refers to someone working behind a bar, serving hot and cold beverages.
Nevertheless, barista is also a synonym for someone highly skilled in the preparation of coffee, coffee equipment, maintenance and last but not least latte art.

Since the year 2000 there is a World Barista Championship with baristas competing against each other for the world title. In 2008 Barista Stephen Morrissey from Dublin won the championship, beating 51 competitors with serving four espressos, four cappuccinos and four personal drinks in 15 minutes.
