A new star on the northern horizon

Latvia has lived in the shadow of many conquerors. The Republic of Latvia was founded in 1918 and has been a sovereign state since 1920, It was occupied by by the Soviet Union from 1940-1941 and 1945-1991 and by Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945. It is now a member of the United Nations, NATO and the European Community, and of the Schengen customs/free trade area. It is an important economic element of the Baltic and European communities, and increasingly a focus of destination tourism.

United Nations map of Latvia

There are a couple of problems with this map: n the Southwest, Lake Liepaja is shown as a small bay open to the sea (apparently a frequent error in maps of Latvia), there are some spelling mistakes perhaps caused by transliteration from Russian maps, and the administrative divisions are out of date. But as a UN map, it is in the public domain. A more up-to-date map showing the post-2009 administrative divisions is here.

The name "Latvija" derives from the Latgallians, one of four Baltic tribes, who along with Couronians, Selonians and Semigallians formed the ancient ethnic core of today's Latvian people.Latvian is a member of the Baltic language group of Indo-European languages Livonian, a nearly extinct ancient Finnic language, and Lagallian, forerunner of Latvian, both enjoy legal protection. Russian, which at one time was spoken by almost all of the population, is not protected, and only recently have the children of Russian-ethnic people been born into Lativan citizenship, both reactions to the Soviet hegenomy over the Baltic states. The capital of Latvia is Riga.

The Status of Russian

On Feb 19th, 2012, Latvians went to the polls to vote in a referendum created by pressure from the Russian-speaking minority.Over two thirds of those voting voted against (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17083397).

Should Russian have been given official second language status? Gluent Latvian is required for government employment, and all documents (e.g. restaurant menus) must include Latvian, (see http://www.wral.com/news/political/story/10744241/)

So what do you think? Should Russian have been given official status?

Loading

Latvian-only is the necessary option. Russian was/is a Soviet-era language

Russian should have status. Latvia should be fair to all its minorities
