I made this lens because recently I did a lot of shopping around for eco friendly, energy efficient dishwashers. After hours of browsing online and local research, I thought I would share what I've learned and save you the trouble~

Things to consider before researching a dishwasher

One little know fact about dishwashers is that according to Consumer Reports, dishwashers are actually a more efficient method of cleaning dishes than hand-washing. Hand washing uses more water per dish than the Energy Star approved dishwashers.

New models have high-efficiency motors which utilize soil-sensors to determine optimal wash cycle length. They adjust the water temp depending on how dirty the dishes are. Historically, most sources recommend you just rub your plates to conserve water and time. New studies show that most new dishwashers do an excellent job of washing dishes without pre-rinsing.

While Dishwashers will only use an average of 2% of your electric bill, they are a major water user, consuming anywhere from 3.5 to 12 gallons per load.

Features and Types.

There are two main dishwasher categories on the market: Portable and Built-in.

The most common sizes: Built-in are made in the sizes, 18" 24" and 30", with most common of these being the 24 inch models. There are also types of dishwashers that cater to people with limited space. These "portable" dishwashers attach to your kitchen faucet and have wheels for transport.

Most of the cheaper models have mechanical controls, plastic interiors, and make more noised than the higher-prices models. Here are some of the many features to look for when deciding on your new dishwasher.

3.Plate warmer mode: warms your dishes before serving

4.Light wash modes- great for sensitive item such as china or crystal dishes

5.Delayed start: allows you to start the wash cycle 1-24 hours after you start it.

6.Add a dish light: alerts you when you can add a dish during the cycle

7.Sanatizing cycle: kills most common bacterium by using a hotter temperature (good for dishes covered in meat juices)

8.stainless steel interior are more durable and sometimes more energy efficient

9.Trim kit- lets you match your dishwasher with the other appliances and features of your kitchen

10.electronic touchpads- are easier to clean and use than the mechanical controls.
