To Get a Real-Life Experience of Detective Sano Ichiro's Environment, You Can Travel to Japan!
Well, the original capital of Japan was Kyoto, but then it was moved to Tokyo (then called "Edo")... the capital also moved from Nara and also Osaka... depending on which feudal daimyo or warlord you considered to be the most powerful for running the country. The emperor, however, was housed in Kyoto and then moved to Tokyo/Edo early in the history of Japan.
So, the best way to enjoy the sights of Japan is to fly into the New Tokyo Narita International Airport, and then, from there, take a train or bus to Tokyo as a center "hub".
From Tokyo, you can take a Shinkansen "bullet-train" through Nagoya to Kyoto. In Kyoto, you can see the Heian Shrine, the Fushimi-Momoyama-Jo (Castle), and other attractions. From Kyoto, you can take a bus to Nara and see the "Shika-Koen" (Deer Park) and the large torii gates and stone-lantern-lined walkways through the park under the huge pine trees and bamboo groves.
If you have more than a few weeks to play, you can also explore the southern part of Japan--including the islands Kyushu and perhaps Okinawa... and the northern part of Japan including the island of Hokkaido.
