Laurel Canyon - A Neighborhood of Los Angeles
Benedict Canyon,Trabuco Canyon,Brea Canyon,Mandeville Canyon,Topanga Canyon,Carbon Canyon. . How many canyons of Southern California can you name? The one that was a crucible for musical creativity in the late 1960s is Laurel Canyon LA. Laurel Canyon is part of the Hollywood Hills which are part of the Santa Monica Mountains. In 1947, prior to the arrival of the hipsters, Laurel Canyon contained a covert movie studio. (Covert in the sense of being run for the military.)
This neighborhood ranked second to Haight Ashbury as the center for the flower-power hippie culture. A bulk of the innovators in folk rock lived or visited the canyon. This was a place with a bohemian flavor, characterized by twisting streets, fantastic views, the smell of eucalyptus, and bungalows where musicians and song writers would drop in to jam and to party.
This area diminished in importance when Disco came in. A tradition of more recent years is the annual ritual of the Community Photograph taken at the Country Market. At one time, the legendary Jim Morrison of the Doors lived behind the store on Rothdell Trail. The hangout at the time of the residents was the Troubadour.

The Groupies
Country Store Flickr Creative CommonsThe definition of a "Groupie" is a person, especially a young woman, who regularly follows a pop music group or other celebrity in the hope of meeting or getting to know them. Pamela Des Barres, a member of the GTOs is the most famous rock-and-roll groupie. The GTOs or "Girls Together Outrageously" were proteges of Frank Zappa. Long ago there were the male equivalent of groupies who hung around chorus girls - some of these went by the name,"Stage Door Johnies." Groupies were among some of the young women coming to the canyon in those days.

....in tribute to another Los Angeles Canyon
Dory Previn's Coldwater Canyon lyrics (excerpt)
well he had a bed that was covered
with tiger skin
it was a non-ecological scene
and she felt so scared
'cause its teeth were bared
and its smile
was righteously mean
he had a water mattress
and a vibrating pillow
designed for decreasing the tension
he had a stereo set
in the headboard yet
and it was featuring
the fifth dimension
high
in a nook on the opposite wall
disguised in a driftwood frame
compatible color tv
tuned to channel three
showing "hunchback of notre dame"
and a huge aquarium
with neon lights
she was quite taken back
by the sharks
and a myna bird
she distinctly hearts
making absolutely
rude remarks
