Did you know? Five fun facts about Lauren Fleshman!

Seriously, I didn't make any of this up!

  1. Lauren won the cross country, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m state titles in her senior year of high school. In California!
  2. Lauren set the US Junior 5,000 meters record when she ran 15:50.18 at Mt. SAC in 2000!
  3. Lauren was a 3-time NCAA Champion at 5,000 meters, matching Jen Rhines as the only other woman to accomplish the feat!
  4. Lauren was a 15-time NCAA All-American and a 5-time NCAA Champion while running for the Stanford Cardinal.
  5. Lauren wrote the book on vacation training. Well, not the book, exactly, but the best blog post I've ever read on the subject!

Was Lauren the greatest Stanford Cardinal distance runner ever?

A bold statement, but the argument can be made...

There have been some great Stanford runners. Brad Hauser, Gabe Jennings, Michael Stember, Ryan Hall, Ian Dobson, PattiSue Plumer, Regina Jacobs (ahem), Alicia Craig, Sara Bei...but is Lauren the best of them all?

15-time All-American, 5 NCAA titles, 3-time 5k champion, US Champion...what do you think?

Yes, Lauren is the best of a very strong list

buraian says:

I'm going to say yes. In a tie with Ryan Hall. Hall will probably go down as the best in 10 years, but at this point in time, I think Lauren Fleshman has had the best career of any runner Stanford has produced.

No, she's on the list, but she's not at the top yet

Lauren the student

From Canyon Country to Palo Alto (via the record books)

"My attitude was that I had run a lot of 5ks, and so I knew that I was prepared for the race, and I knew that I should be able to respond to any move anybody in the NCAA could make. And so it was just a matter of whether or not I followed through..." --Lauren Fleshman on racing Shalane Flanagan in the 5k at the 2003 NCAA Championships

Lauren Fleshman began her running career at Canyon High School in Canyon Country, California. She won the State Championships 1600m and 3200m as a junior, and then won the Div. I State Cross Country Championships as a senior. She finished second at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships that year to Victoria Chang, who would become her teammate at Stanford. In her final high school track season, Fleshman tripled at the State Meet, winning the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m. Her PR of 10:18.81 for 3200m was a US high school leader her senior year.

Lauren enrolled at Stanford University where she majored in human biology. On the track, she immediately began making her mark as a freshman. She finished 3rd at the PAC-10 Cross Country Championships and 5th at the NCAA meet. She then made the World Cross Country team where she finished 26th in the 6k race and was the top U.S. finisher.

On the track, Lauren anchored her Stanford distance medley relay team to an NCAA Indoor title (11.01.56). She broke the US Junior record for 5000m at Mt. SAC, running 15:50.18. She was the PAC-10 runner-up over 1500m and finished 5th at that distance at the NCAA Championships, running 4:17.76. She then won the U.S. Junior Championship for 1500m (4:31.50) and placed second in the 3000m (9:55.55). She ended the year finishing 15th in the Olympic Trials 5k in 16:35.90.

Lauren's sophomore year cross country season saw her take 3rd place at the PAC-10 meet and 11th place at NCAAs (20:54.5). She ran a PR in the mile of 4:39.69 indoors and placed 3rd in that event at the NCAA Indoor meet (4:43.52). She was the runner-up in the PAC-10 1500m and the NCAA Champion at 5000m (15:52.21). She placed 17th at the USA Outdoors, and finished the year with a PR of 15:49.84.

Lauren's junior year included a PAC-10 Championship in cross country and a 3rd place finish at the NCAA Cross Country meet (20:35). She set an indoor mile PR of 4:38.48 before winning the NCAA Indoor 3000m title in 9:07.45. Her outdoors season saw her run a collegiate-leading 15:35.59, win the PAC-10 Championships for 5000m, and defend her NCAA title for 5000m (15:53.91). She finished 9th at the USA Outdoors 5000m (15:50.31).

Lauren had another great year as a senior. She was the runner-up in the PAC-10 XC meet, and finished 4th at the NCAAs (won by Shalane Flanagan). On the track she finished 2nd at the NCAA Indoors 3000m (9:01.58, again behind Flanagan) and 4th in the 5000m (15:47.36). She set an NCAA-record of 15:23.94 in the 5000m at the Mt. SAC Invitational. She then won the PAC-10 5000m in 16:37.52 and finished second in the 1500m in a PR 4:14.68. At the NCAA Championships Lauren again defended her 5000m title, running 15:24.06 to defeat Shalane Flanagan by six seconds.

At the US Outdoor Championships, Lauren finished 4th in a time of 15:27.68. Only the winner Marla Runyan had the "A" standard. When Runyan opted not to run in the 5000m at the 2003 World Championships, Lauren became the sole US representative because she had met the "B" standard. She ran one race in Heusden (15:20.44) and then finished 11th in the opening round of the World Championships, running a personal best of 15:12.71.
