What is Ambient?
Ambient light is the existing or available lighting for illumination of the surroundings.
A Lava Lamp would be considered a fill light where the normal ambient light is accented with motion and with color. In some cases, fill lights provide the strongest light source and bounce their glowing colors onto surfaces, creating ambiance and a contrasting factor in the finished surrounding.
I personally like to use fill lights and candles to create visual art ambiance and set a more interesting show by motion and color. It does make a room seem more alive!

As a stand alone fill light this lava lamp would have lots of visual appeal and interest because of the three different colors inside. It would be a very nice accent in any room, if these are the colors you that you prefer.
A Set of 2 - Add A Colorful Lite Candle Beside
It is more appealing to the human eye to see things in three rather then two or one.
The artistic balance is off in this picture because there are only two objects. I would add a pretty candle holder with a lite candle in it to balance out the image.
Let's bring the 3 lava lamps back from the intro.
Look at the visual interest that three lights makes compared to two.
To the human eye it is more appealing to see things in sets of three or just one.
Look at the difference for yourself. Which is more appealing?
In selecting visual art or ambient lighting, decide if you want appeal or do you want to try and balance things out with only two.
One fill light would be appealing! Three would create a triangle and would be very lovely spaced around a room or in a group. A set of two in a room loses from a visual appeal of interest.

These light night-light lava lamps are nice and very reasonably priced. They are nice in any room as an accent of ambiance.
It would be a good idea to have a spare light bulb on hand in case the one burns out.
Just remember that the little night lights will get hot to touch too! They have a strong watt bulb in them so that the lava lamp will get hot and have its motion from the heat of the bulb.

How Pretty 3 Lava Lamps Can Be...
Putting the same size lava lamps together is a group is a good idea. What I would recommend is have two on different height stands of some kind, and one flat on the table or wherever you put them. The different heights will be a delight to the eyes too!

- I miss my lava lamp. Hmm ... come to think of it, I have no idea what ever became of it. I got the lamp for Christmas when I was maybe 13 and loved it and used it for years. I'd sometimes just sit there and stare at the wax blobs--mine was purple--and daydream for hours. It was mesmerizing.

You probably wonder why I would remember such an odd "holiday". That was the day my favorite "neighbor" and I shared our first kiss which led to almost 10 years of marriage.
