Tap

There are a few very important points that you should bear in mind with watering. By following these guidelines you will soon be on your way to a greener lawn.

1) If you apply pressure to your lawn and it does not return to its original form and spring back then this is a good indication that the lawn needs to be watered.

2) Do not water your lawn everyday. If you water everyday the roots will only grow short which will eventually weaken the lawn.

3) Lawns actually require to be watered infrequently but with heavy watering. This is different to the care of garden plants which will instead need to be watered much more regularly but with less water.

In giving your lawn a heavy watering it will allow the water to travel much deeper in to the soil. This in turn allows the grass roots to become more established a deeper depths, around 200-300mm. The deeper the root the more resistant your lawn will be at times of little or no rain.

Build Your Own Sprinklers

4) Always use a gentle sprinkler than a more harsh spray. The use of the a gentle spray allows the lawn to soak up the moisture much more easily.

5) Do not water your lawn everyday.

Nutrients - Adding Goodness To Your Lawn

Create a Healthy, Lush Lawn

Follow these guidelines for a natural way to a healthy green lawn.

1) Do not use pesticides. These do not lead to a healthy lawn and are also not healthy for you, your children or animals.

2) Use a slow release nitrogen based fertilizer.

3) Many people only use fertilizer in the summer months. It is much better to use the fertilizer throughout the year. Especially in the beginning of Spring and then again in the middle of Spring.

4) Using a fertilizer in the Summer can, if used excessively, burn your lawn.

5) It is helpful to leave the grass cuttings on your cut lawn. This is a great natural producer of nutrients to lead to a naturally healthy lawn.

How To Cut Your Grass

An Important Step In Getting That Green Lawn

In pursuit of your lawn troubleshooting solutions the cause of many problems is in respect to the cutting of the lawn. Many mistakes are made when cutting the grass. Follow these simple tips to help make a stronger greener lawn.

1) Do not cut your grass too short. Short grass creates short roots which will mean that your lawn will become damaged in times of low rainfall and find it harder to rejuvenate.

2) Always cut your lawn when the grass is dry. Cutting grass when it is wet causes the grass to tear.

3) Ensure that the blade of your mower is always kept sharp. This will prevent you from tearing the grass.

4) On hot summer days do not cut the grass during the day. It is best to wait until after 6pm or 7pm so that the heat of the sun will not damage the cut grass and lead to a yellow or brown lawn.

5) Save your grass cuttings. They will create a great natural fertilizer to be used on your garden plants and vegetables.

6) The best height to cut grass at is around 2-3 inches. This helps to create long roots for your lawn. This leads to a more resilient lawn.

7) Do not always use the grass catcher on your lawn mower. Allowing the grass cuttings to fall on your grass allows the nutrients to travel back to the roots of your grass.

Aerating Your Lawn

Lawn Troubleshooting - An Easy Way to A Greener Lawn

Aerating is essentially creating holes in your lawn. This is often a step that is ignored by many. Aerating is an important step and one that will help in your quest to grow a green lawn.

1) Aerating your lawn allows air, water and the nutrients to travel deep through the soil to the root of the grass.

2) Aerate your lawn in the autumn/the fall.

3) If you do not have an aerator then a simple garden fork can be used. Make the holes 3 inches deep and keep the holes about 10 inches apart. Do this for the whole of your garden.

4) You will need to aerate your lawn, usually in the fall, and the easiest way to do this is to use a garden fork. The depth of the holes should be about 3 inches and you should repeat this every 6 inches apart over your entire lawn. If you prefer, you can purchase tools for aerating your lawn but the fork works perfectly and is fairly inexpensive.
