Lawn Care - A Homeowner's Guide to Keep You Sane

If you own a home, and have a lawn, chances are you are aware of some of the challenges of maintaining it! I've made just about every mistake in the book learning about how to care for my lawn. Please read on to learn from my mistakes.

Caution: Lawn care has been shown to be hazardous to your mental health (when you live in a desert, and your home owner's association insists on green grass during the hottest months of the year)!

Lawn Care 101

The Stuff You Have to Do

Here are the basics of lawn care.

Watering

- If you have a lawn there is a good chance that your biggest water useage is watering your lawn. Statistics suggest that about 50% of water consumed by households is used outdoors.
Here's a really good article on things you can do to conserve water and save some money in the process.

Fertilizing

Depending on your location or zone you live in, it still is a daunting task to know when to apply and how many times a year does it need to be applied. Here is some great information that answered my questions.

Insecticides

Scary stuff, I try to avoid handling, unless necessary. I have found a granular form is easier for me to apply. Mostly to control grubs in the summer months. The brand Merit or comonly known "Grubex" has much less impact on ground worms and other critters that help the soil. Here is summary of how to control grubs from the Colorado State Extension gave me the information I needed.

Revive

The product Revive has helped keep dry areas of my lawn in check. I have found that during the mid-summer heat, a monthly application keeps the Kentucky Blue Grass looking like it should. It is a wetting agent that allows water to be absorbed, along with some other features that help nutients move to the root system.

Mowing and edging

What more needs to be said here, it takes time and energy to keep up in the spring. Normally I mulch my clippings. There are times that I can't because the grass has grown to much, then I have to bag it.
