Mixed Media Art Journal

What is an Art Journal?

An art journal is a sort of diary with art in it. You can use it to record your thoughts, events in your life, your travels and, well... anything. It doesn't have to be written up day-to-day like a conventional diary - though of course if that's what you want to do, then go for it.

You might start by adding a small sketch to a journal page. Or glue in a photo. Or a train ticket. Then you could add some crayon for color. Before you know it, the journal takes on a life of its own and you have a mixed-media art journal.

This page isn't a 'how-to-make-an-art-journal' - there are other pages linked here that can show you how to get started - I just wanted to share a few journal pages I made recently.

Guided by Her Emotion Layered Journal Page

Guided by Her Emotion

'Guided by Her Emotion' art journal pageI had this little blank cardboard accordion book stashed away among my art materials for ages. I have always used watercolor paper, pads and books for my art journals and didn't like the idea of using plain old cardboard. Not sure why, but the other day, I dug it out and gave it a coat of gesso (acrylic primer).

I painted it with one coat of acrylic paint. Dried it thoroughly with a hairdryer and added another color. I used paper towel to rub off the top coat so that parts of the under color showed through. On some pages I wrote chunks of text - journaling thoughts and feelings - before covering with a layer of paint.

'Happy Feeling' Journal Page

Happy Feeling Art JournalThe little journal has extra flaps and folds, so it is difficult to show it properly. I added some rubber stamping, drew a faces, flowers and other stuff on watercolor paper, colored them with watercolor crayons and stuck them into the journal.

I dipped one side of a small piece of bubble wrap into paint and lightly pressed onto sections of the page - you can see it better on the purple page above.

Tip: on one side of the collage use a little charcoal to blend the collage into the page background.

'True Self' art journal page

Text on the Journal Pages

'True Self' journal pageAlthough it is hard to see from the scans, the text stamped and printed on the page goes something like this, "Guided by her emotion... and a happy feeling... she made a little birdhouse in her soul...(always looking)... for her true self." I was listening to an Abraham-Hicks CD and just putting in phrases that they used. Then later I was listening to music and They Might Be Giants came on with one of my all-time favorite songs, "Make a Little Birdhouse in Your Soul", and I couldn't resist using it.

On the flap that folds down I stamped "Be authentic,"

Layering paint and collage, text, rubber stamping and pastel in an art journal adds more interest and extra dimensions. I like to do my private journaling on the page and then cover it with layers of gesso, paint, collage, charcoal, pastel and... well anything I have to hand.
