Where To Start
The majority of people who began using MySpace were teens and young adults. Unfortunately there are now lots of older people who have profiles on MySpace and are using the site to meet teens.
Some of the folks who use MySpace are involved for reasons that are not appropriate and could very easily put young people in danger. There are groups on MySpace that are designated for Swingers and homosexuals. There are also people who use MySpace to distribute and view photos of naked boys and girls.

Surfing Safety
Parents who have kids using MySpace should be as informed as possible about the site and be willing to monitor and discuss the site with their children. Younger teens may be very vulnerable to the people who use MySpace as a way to solicit sex.Teens and young adults who plan to be part of MySpace or already have a profile on the site should always use caution. Even when you specify a certain list of people whom you want to correspond with you should know that anyone can read your profile and study your information or look at the photos you post.
MySpace can be a fun and easy way to talk to friends and meet people online but it is important to exercise a little common sense.

MySpace Security
What's more worrisome that a public MySpace page? A page that the user only thinks is private. I was just alerted to several stories by Kevin Poulsen of Wired News that publicize recent security breaches on MySpace.Poulsen reported on January 17 about a MySpace Bug that leaks "private" teen photos to voyeurs. He wrote, "A backdoor in MySpace's architecture allows anyone who's interested to see the photographs of some users with private profiles -- including those under 16 -- despite assurances from MySpace that those pictures can only be seen by people on a user's friends list. Info about the backdoor has been circulating on message boards for months."
These message boards include self-described groups of "pedos" who hacked into underage-girls' private MySpace profiles. According to Poulsen, one poster reported successfully pilfering photos from a randomly-chosen 14-year-old girl, "It worked and I was shown her pictures. Now lets see some naked sluts."
On January 18, Poulsen updated the story to say that the next day, MySpace quietly fixed that back-door bug, without publicly acknowledging the problem, even though users' profiles had been vulnerable for months.
Then on January 24, Poulsen reported that "A 17-gigabyte file purporting to contain more than half a million images lifted from private MySpace profiles has shown up on BitTorrent, potentially making it the biggest privacy breach yet on the top social networking site."
Reporting kudos to Poulsen for staying on top of these emerging privacy concerns. I haven't seen this story widely-reported elsewhere, which is significant since public scrutiny and user concerns are the main points of leverage we have with companies like MySpace and its owner News Corporation to pressure them to devote sufficient resources to developing safe and secure products. Taken together with Facebook's Beacon fiasco, breaches like these are sure to reinforce the impression that they still have a long way to go.
MySpace Wins UK Domain Name
It seems you can. Antony Gold, chosen as an independent expert in the arbitration process run by the .uk domain registry, Nominet, has ruled in favor of MySpace.
What tipped this case over in MySpace's favor was the fact that myspace.co.uk was your average "parked" page with a bunch of ads, and it was therefore ruled an "abusive registration." The domain used to be used for a better purpose before, but the owner - Total Web Solutions (TWS) - figured that MySpace-related ads will do better (and I'm guessing it did earn them a hefty sum of money.) Thus, the court saw this practice as "abuse."
TWS, however, has quite a sound argument on their side, too, referring to an older ruling, in the case over the name verbatim.co.uk, where the panel had said: "the Complainant must satisfy the Panel, as an opener, that the Respondent was aware of the existence of the Complainant or its brand at the date of registration of the Domain Name or at commencement of an objectionable use of the Domain Name." Basically, they say that MySpace was well aware that the domain myspace.co.uk is already used when they started their service, and it's probably true. Furthermore, they claim that they didn't choose to use the MySpace-related ads; they were automatically chosen by an algorithm when MySpace became wildly popular.
In the end, the better known party got the upper hand, but I'm not quite convinced that the decision was fair, as I fail to see what was "abusive" in the way TWS handled the domain.
Breaking News Myspace
Jan 31, 2008
In addition to overseeing "development and implementation of all global business operations," Kapur, who was promoted from vp business development, will have responsibility for the growth of the new MySpace Developer Platform.
Beginning on Tuesday 2/5, outside developers will be able to begin building applications and features for use on the social network, though MySpace is withholding most of the other details of the program until next week. It has set up a page for developers to preregister for the platform at developer.mypsace.com.
The company has not said when the applications will be able to be applied to pages on the social network.
MySpace also has not released information on what kind of revenue share the platform will have with third parties. But the company said it "will actively work to help developers monetize and promote their applications."
MySpace will hold a "kickoff event" and workshop for developers Tuesday in San Francisco.
The implementation of the platform has been expected, and it will be compatible with Google's Open Social standards. Facebook opened its platform in a similar way in May, seen as one of the reasons for that site's growing popularity during the past several months.
Kapur has been with MySpace since 2005, when he was the company's first business developer hire; in 2006, he was promoted to vp business development, helping to seal MySpace's monetization deal with Google, its partnership with Skype and a music licensing pact with Sony BMG.
Also on Wednesday, MySpace and the Weinstein Company launched a short horror film contest in conjunction with "George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead," which will be released on February 15. Entrants will be able to submit short horror films to myspace.com/diaryofthedead from now through February 29 to enter in the contest. MySpace users will vote on the ten best entries and then "Diary" writer and director Romero will choose five to be featured on the DVD release of the Weinstein-distributed movie.
Developer Platform
LOS ANGELES, Feb 05, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MySpace, the world's most popular social network, today announced the launch of the MySpace Developer Platform Site (http://developer.myspace.com), giving software developers around the world the chance to deeply integrate into MySpace. The MySpace Developer Platform Site is a place for developers to connect and learn about, build, test, and deploy MySpace applications. As a founding partner of OpenSocial, MySpace is empowering developers with an open standard for building MySpace applications to foster innovation and creativity on the Internet.MySpace will kick off the program tonight by hosting an event at their new offices in San Francisco where developers will get firsthand experience with the Platform. The event also signifies the beginning of a one-month application development period to democratize the development process for the industry and allow them to build and test their applications. During that time applications will not be visible to the MySpace community in order for developers to install, iterate, and test the security of their applications in a live environment.
The MySpace Developer Platform Site includes:
-- Three sets of APIs:
-- OpenSocial with MySpace extensions to enable javascript and html
-- Action scripts to allow flash to speak directly to our APIs
-- REST to enable server-to-server communication (speeding up applications)
-- Developer Team Blog: A place to hear about product updates, platform news, developer insight and commentary, and to interact with the MySpace Developer Team (http://developer.myspace.com/Community/blogs/devteam/ default.aspx) (Due to its length, this URL may need to be copied/pasted into your Internet browser's address field. Remove the extra space if one exists.)
-- Documentation: All available information about the Developer Platform
-- Forums: MySpace developers will answer questions and provide feedback to third-party developers
-- Test harnesses: Developers can test applications on a limited number of profiles in a functional environment
Beginning in March, the MySpace Developer Platform will be rolled out to users. At that time, MySpace will unveil the new applications in an Application Gallery, aimed to enrich the member experience and facilitate the application discovery process. Members will be able to add new applications to both their personal user home and profile pages. In the spirit of democratization, all Platform applications will launch at the same time.
All applications will be able to access publicly available profile information including a user's friend list, interests, photos & albums, video, as well as status & mood. All applications will have real estate in five places within MySpace including:
-- A MySpace application profile (users can "friend" the apps)
-- Access to embed applications on the user homepage (inward facing -- for you to see)
-- Access to embed applications on profiles (outward facing widget -- for friends to see)
-- An application gallery listing
-- A canvas page
"The future of the global social Web will leverage the creativity of the masses to produce meaningful and diverse social experiences, pushing the industry to be more innovative and progressive," said Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace. "We are committed to lowering the barrier to entry for developers around the world to build a more collaborative and dynamic Internet, while empowering our members to take control of their online presence in new and exciting ways."
Over the next month, MySpace will take an active role in helping developers create applications and build a rich economy within the Platform. Developers will be able to interact with the MySpace development team, and give feedback on the entire process. The MySpace development team will additionally focus on how the applications being created will affect security and the quality of the user experience on the site.
MySpace will be deploying new technology designed to ensure that applications are safe for end-consumers. This technology has been developed in-house over the last several years, and in conjunction with partners like Google. One key technology is Caja, a javascript sanitizer being developed by Google in cooperation with MySpace. Caja's purpose is to make Javascript safer for use on sites like MySpace, so that developers can create rich, full-featured applications in a way that is secure and trusted for our members.
"Applications will be governed by the same privacy controls that are in place for members," said MySpace CTO Aber Whitcomb. "An application will never have access to information that cannot be found on any member's profile page. Applications will also go through a rigorous safety review process before going live to our members."
Additional features will also roll out as the site develops. For more information about the MySpace Developer Platform, please visit http://developer.myspace.com. Screen shots, logos, fact sheets and documentation are available to media upon request.
