Acetyl L-Carnitine

This lens is meant to introduce you to Acetyl L-Carnitine and the many benefits of adding it to your diet. For instance, some people experience a feeling of enlightenment, use it to sharpen their brain, and feel more energetic. Body builders even use it to help burn fat. It's often times found in energy drinks such as Red Bull. However, it's best if no more than 1500 mg a day are taken daily. Interestingly, a prescription is required to obtain it in Canada, while in the United States it is not.

Acetyl L-Carnitine

Carnitine is a quaternary ammonium compound biosynthesized from the amino acids lysine and methionine. In living cells, it is required for the transport of fatty acids from the cytosol into the mitochondria during the breakdown of lipids (or fats) for the generation of metabolic energy. It is often sold as a nutritional supplement. Carnitine was originally found as a growth factor for mealworms and labeled vitamin Bt. Carnitine exists in two stereoisomers: its biologically active form is L-carnitine, while its enantiomer, D-carnitine, is biologically inactive.

Would you like more energy--but without the stimulants that can make you edgy? Consider taking supplements of carnitine or acetyl-L-carnitine, two forms of the same nutrient found naturally in protein. By boosting the activity of the body's cellular furnaces, carnitine can energize the heart, brain, and muscles, and get them to do more. This supplement has also been found to be helpful in treating many health conditions, including heart failure, muscle weakness, and failing memory. It's also oft...0 points

Acetyl-L-Carnitine Side Effects

Too much of a good thing...

Although Acetyl-L-Carntine is an amazing amino acid that you body needs, you should limit how much you take daily.

If you take too much (more than 1500 mg), you may experience nausea, irritability, sleeplessness (insomnia), excitability, and restlessness. If you are experiencing these effects, try taking less and focus on taking the dosage in the morning.
