Information to Help Shop for LCD TVs

LCD TVs have flooded the markets and seemingly all major brands have nothing but the best to offer. So how do you pick one from the huge choice available?

A few technicalities associated with LCD TVs

LCD TVs are in, and not just because they are a fashion statement, but simply because the advantages are abundant. This is true especially in comparison to the CRT version. LCD TVs are thinner and light weighted and therefore perfect for compact dimensions. In fact over a number of important yardsticks, LCD TVs are much better performers than the available CRT substitutes. Call it better picture display or comfort in terms of lowered eye strain, LCD TVs easily present a strong case in their favour. So for the upcoming festive season a LCD TV is a good shopping item for personal usage or as a gift. However, when you buy any of the LCD TVs please don't be under the impression that the set will work forever. LCD TVs have a lifespan which is something to the tune of 60,000 hours. There are companies claiming that under the most suitable circumstances their products would go on for longer, but the claims are debatable.

While the purchasing decision is easy, buying a suitable LCD TV could actually turn out to be a slightly difficult exercise. Not because there are technicalities involved, but because the choices are many. A number of reputed brands like Sony, LG, Samsung, Toshiba and more have launched their products in the LCD TVs category. The options thus are varied. Each company, of course, has a strong marketing strategy or call it a tempting advertisement campaign to back their product. This LCD TVs buying guide however is not about comparing the various brand options, but about offering generalised information on LCD TVs to enable a convenient purchase.

Before heading on to any showroom for purchase or comparisons, take a mental picture of the room where you will be putting the TV. LCD TVs can be fixated on the wall or can be placed like a TV set on a table. Of course with either situation you need to keep your TV away from any potential source of heat like a microwave and to be placed in a properly ventilated area. Another aspect worth consideration here would be the distance between you and the LCD TV screen. There should be enough distance between you and the screen, which increases with the screen size. Unless you pay attention to this, the viewing clarity would be affected. Watching the LCD screen too close will not only mean more eye strain but will also be responsible for deteriorated picture quality. So for a size of up to 27 inches, at least try a distance of 4 feet. Also a very big TV in a small room is not aesthetically appropriate.

If you've noticed, the various TV adverts often talk about resolution. Don't ignore this term simply because it is too technical. Resolution refers to the picture quality. Higher the resolution offered, better is the picture quality of the concerned LCD TV. Contrast ratio and motion response time are two more important features to be checked while making the purchase decision. High contrast ratio will enable better picture quality and motion response time deals with the fast motion picture blurring effects.

The next important consideration is price. LCD TVs are available over a broad price range, so how do you decide? Well your budget of course is the prime determinant, along with the stated features and LCD TVs warranty offered to enable you to obtain the best deal you can secure.
