Le Creuset - Fabulous Cast Iron Cookware
Ranked #5,138 in Food & Cooking, #91,648 overall | Donates to Save the Children
Le Creuset is My Favourite Cookware
I was given my first Le Creuset cast iron pan way back in 1989 and since then, I've never wanted to use anything else.
I love their traditional designs made with French flair, adding a degree of sophistication to pans and casserole dishes. I also like the colours available - most of mine are a deep blue but I like the red ones shown here too. Even more than their look, I appreciate the great way the cast iron holds the heat and distributes it evenly thoughout the pan. You don't get hot spots in Le Creuset cookware so food cooks evenly.

Le Creuset's Very First Product
A cast iron cocotte

Le Creuset was born in 1925 when Armand Desaegher and Octave Aubecq combined their skills to form a company to producing quality cookware. Desaegher was an expert in cast iron and Aubecq in enamelling.
The very first Le Creuset product was a cocotte. Perhaps it didn't look exactly like the one above which is part of the company's current range. This one is available in other colours and is a mini-cocotte suitable for individual portions of soup or a pot pie, for example. One of the really great things about this cookware is that the knobs on lids can go in the oven without damage (up to 400 deg F).
This cocotte is available from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk

Le Creuset Enameled Cast Iron 5-Piece Set
Le Creuset Essential Enameled Cast-Iron 5-Piece Cookware Set, Satin Red
Le Creuset combines three of its most commonly-used, cast-iron cookware items in this excellent set consisting of a 3-1/2-quart round French oven with lid; 1-1/4-quart precision-pour lidded saucepan with phenolic handle; and 9-inch skillet with helper handle and two pour spouts.
Each heavy piece is coated with hard porcelain enamel for superior performance, and is attractive and durable enough to go straight from the stovetop or oven to the table. You'll find the small saucepan ideal for whisking sauces and heating soup; the French oven perfect for baking casseroles and meats; and the skillet a charm for saut%uFFFDing fish or making the perfect omelet. From Amazon.com's description
A Review of the 5pce Set from Amazon.com
"I bought this set as a gift to my wife for Xmas, and we were really pleased with the product. The cast-iron really helps heat the food; when cooking spaghetti sauce or stews the food cooks well and evenly. I like the heavy, sturdy feel of the pots as well, along with their enamel which helps with the cleaning. The instruction booklets contained helpful guides to maintaining the pots, so I know I will be able to get a lifetime's usage out of these pots." from Amazon.com

5 Quart French Oven
Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 5-Quart Oval French Oven, Red
I have one of these oval French ovens or casseroles and I use it all the time. I've roasted meat and potatoes in it, cooked casseroles in the oven or stews on the stove top. Whether I use it at high temperatures for roasting or lower ones for casseroles, in the oven or on a gas or electric burner, it performs perfectly.

Review of the 5 Quart French Oven
"This was my first and is still my favorite Le Creuset piece. It heats evenly, cleans up easily. It's great for small roasts (make your gravy in the same pot, it goes right on the stovetop), chili, soups, and everything in between. I can't imagine my kitchen life without this pot." from Amazon.com
2 Quart Moroccan Tagine
Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 2-Quart Moroccan Tagine, Dijon
I think this tagine is beautiful. It's so lovely, I would want it on display when I'm not using it. I haven't got one yet but it's definitely the next Le Creuset pot I buy.
It combines the company's best known material with its cast iron base and stoneware top. Here's Amazon's description of it: "The traditional method of cooking in North Africa - the Tagine - has been used for centuries to slow cook with... spices. Precious little water is needed to keep foods moist, and the unique design of the Tagine lid locks in the combination of flavors..."

Le Creuset Wok
Available in Other Colours including Black
I've had my Le Creuset wok for about 8 years. It's very similar to this one but black cast iron and it has one long handle instead of two small ones. I use it all the time to stir fry, make curry, pasta sauce and anything else which needs fast frying without the danger of burning the food. The even heat of the cast iron wok is ideal. The shape is good too because anything that needs more cooking can be moved to the bottom of the wok and more delicate food can be higher up the sides. The other great thing about it is that anything like curry or pasta sauces don't burn, again it's that heavy cast iron that protects them. You can turn down the heat on the burner and the iron retains heat so food continues to cook.
Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 14-1/4-Inch Wok with Glass Lid, Red
This 4-3/4-quart-capacity wok is ideal for proper stir-frying, but is also practical for deep-frying foods due to its wide top and narrow bottom, which allows for frying with less oil than with a straight-sided pan. It also can be used for steaming and braising with its see-through glass lid. Efficient on all heat sources, the wok's cast-iron construction distributes heat evenly and retains heat longer. Its porcelain-enamel interior resists sticking and requires no seasoning, and the enamel exterior is easy to clean. The wok's heat-resistant phenolic knob and handles are oven safe to 400 degrees F, and the pan is dishwasher safe for quick cleanup. The cast iron wok measures 14-1/4 by 14-1/4 by 6 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty. From Amazon.com's description
Le Creuset Cast-Iron Wok with Glass Lid
"I was not sure this wok would measure up to my standards of Chinese cooking. I have two other traditional Chinese steel woks that I use a lot. But, what I found with this wok is that, even though the heat source doesn't have to be on high, the mass of iron in this wok generated much more heat and my Chinese dishes came out fantastically. I have been totally shocked at how this wok performed." from Amazon.com
Would You Use Cast Iron Cookware?
Some people love cast iron cookware like Le Creuset while others don't because it's heavy and it's relatively expensive too. I could only buy mine one piece at a time spread over several years. What do you think? Would you like to use it or not?

Review of the Cookbook
Glorious One-Pot Meals: A Revolutionary New Quick and Healthy Approach to Dutch-Oven Cooking
"I have dozens and dozens of cookbooks, but when I received a beautiful 7 qt. Dutch oven as a gift I wanted a cookbook with recipes specific to it's use. I couldn't have made a better choice. This cookbook gives good instructions so you can adapt the recipes for quantity or dietary changes. I don't eat red meat or pork, but easily changed to use chicken or just vegie meals. There are lots of good recipes for all categories. It's great to be able to premake and pop in the oven and not have to be in the kitchen cooking when having guests to dinner. I highly recommend this cookbook." from Amazon.com

- Hi Carol - just touched base with you on Senior Squids on Ning! Certainly agree with you about Le Creuset - nothing can compare. I expect my pans will far outlive me! If I have a wish for what next, there is a wide flattish lidded pan that I've seen used on quite a few celeb chef programmes like Delia and James Martin.

- I suppose we should consider including our Le Creuset pots in our wills as, you're right, they'll probably survive long after we've gone.

- I certainly love my wok. I used it again yesterday for a stir fry. It's only disadvantage is that it's heavy. Using it helps build the muscles in your wrists and arms, though. :)
