Lead Acid Batteries can be evaluated based on there intended application. When evaluated based on application, there are three basic application groups. They are automotive, marine, and deep cycle batteries. If you are considering lead acid battery repair it is important to have a basic knowledge of the available types as it relates to the proper application for each battery.

Automotive lead acid batteries can also be known as a starting battery or SLI(Starting, Lighting, Ignition) battery. Typical requirements for an automotive battery are very high supply currents over a short period of time, and the depth of discharge should be kept at a minimum(<5%) to ensure maximum battery life. Good example of an automotive battery application is starting an automobile.

Deep cycle lead acid batteries are designed for power requirements that are the opposite of automotive lead acid batteries. Deep cycle batteries are designed for a maximum depth of discharge requirement of up to 80%, and are not designed to be able to provide high supply currents over short periods of time like an automotive battery. Typical applications for a deep cycle lead acid battery are industrial fork lifts, and golf carts.

Marine batteries can be considered to be a hybrid battery. Basically their use and structure falls between the automotive and deep cycle lead acid batteries mentioned above. Typically a marine lead acid battery should not exceed a depth of discharge of 50%. Their application can range from starting a marine motor to operating a trolling motor.

When presented with a battery that will not provide the required power for its application, we often just throw them away assuming the battery is no longer any good. We may try charging them a few times, or leave the charger on them for an extended period of time. After repeating this process a few times, we finally break down and conclude that the only viable option is to spend the money and purchase a new battery.

What a waste, the above situation is all to common when it comes to lead acid batteries. Most of us, if not all of us would never throw something away that was still of value to us. The main reason for this is due to a lack of knowledge of the average consumer. Some of us may be thinking, why don't the battery companies help ensure their consumers get the most out of their lead acid batteries. The truth is that we live in an industrial society driven by the dollar bill. Basically the uneducated consumer is the perfect consumer in this particular case. The longer their batteries are in service and providing value to the consumer the less batteries they sell, and the lower their profit.

Its important to understand that lead acid battery refurbishing, reconditioning, and repair is important for our pocket books and the environment.
