Publish your book: Self-publishing or conventional pulishing?

This lens tries to discuss about various aspects of publishing and options available to Authors.

Self Publishing or Conventional Publishing

You wrote a book. Next step?

For any author, particualrly new for new authors getting their book published is a dream. They need to approach a lot of publishers, literary agents etc.... Nowadays, getting published has become more difficult than it used to be, with literary agents playing an active role. So, an author has to impress two layers with his work, his agent and the publisher, though the literary agent can take that worst part apart from the author. Again the problem is choosing a good publisher or a competent literary agent. If you cant get them right, your book may not see the light of the day. When you approach these many people, you will hear a lot of opinions and comments about your cherished work. Considering the fact that only a fraction of manuscripts are ever get printed, no wonder writers often cling to whatever offer they get.

Self-publishing can be a good option if you are not looking at the monetory aspect and you want to avoid editorial evaluation. If you feel the urgency to get published and reach out to the readers without any edits to your work, self-publishing is the answer. But thats not the best option, if you are a serious writer trying to gain readership for your books. Since, you are bearing the costs of printing and distibution also, you may not make much money if you cant sell a lot of copies. With traditional publishers, if you can strike a deal, you make a lot of money for a best-seller and with advance payments for your future books. So, there are a few choices to make.

First tryst with writing can be fun

Simple steps to follow

Just like a builder builds a foundation of a construction, you need to prepare a foundation for your career in writing. Just follow the simple steps%u2026
1. Write what you are passionate about. If you wrote on your favorite subject, you are likely to impress your readers easily.
2. Write down whatever is on your mind. Stop looking for the 'perfect' sentence. If you have nothing else to write start with "I don't know what to write." Eventually, your string of thoughts would come together and the script would be completed. Once you start writing the overall concept will emerge gradually.
3. Don't Stop Reading - It's impossible to become a writer without being a reader first. Having discovered your penchant for writing, one shouldn't stop reading altogether. Reading on a variety of subject will help diversify your taste. If you want to improve, read everything that you can get your hands on.
4. You need not be perfect - If you ask any renowned writer, they'll suggest the same. No one is a perfect writer and they will never be. If you allow your writing to stagnate, readers will soon get bored with your work. One always needs to keep improvising.
5. Choose your subject very carefully - You should prefer to write about subjects of which you have a sound knowledge. But if you find something that interests you but you don't have adequate knowledge about then feel free to do some research on it by all means. Don't ever underestimate your readers.
6. Pay attention to your Vocabulary - Using high-sounding words may not appeal to all your readers. But building your vocabulary surely wouldn't hurt. Increasing your vocabulary can make your life simpler for you to develop a story idea or an effective manner. It will help you set the mood for a particular chapter. But more important than that, building your vocabulary will reduce the chances of making wrong usages and you can express more effectively.
7. Draft your ideas at once - Always carry a pen and a paper handy in your bag. If you are suddenly hit by an idea, which you can develop in future, just, write it down immediately. A good dialogue, an interesting character or an incident can have tremendous potential for a good chapter. Good story ideas come a dime in a dozen, but great ideas are definitely few, and who knows if one of those anecdotes helps you scale great heights. You should never stop writing. Don't write because you ought to write. Write because you love to write.
