What Causes Leaky Gut Syndrome?

If you suffer from Leaky Gut Disease (aka Leaky Gut Syndrome), you have probably asked yourself "Why?" about a million times. How did you "get" this? What caused it?

There probably isn't one single thing you can point to as the cause of leaky gut disease, but some of the possible "contributors" include chronic stress, environmental contaminants, immune overload, overuse of NSAIDS, gastrointestinal disease, and bacteria, parasites, and yeasts. Needless to say, since Leaky Gut involves the digestive system, many believe that its development is influenced by dietary factors, e.g., insufficient fiber, too much alcohol, zinc deficiencies.

If you suffer from leaky gut syndrome and want to improve your dietary health, consider the following 3 steps:

  • Improving Your Digestion
  • Changing Your Diet
  • Restoring Intestinal Integrity with Supplements

Improving Your Digestion

If you want to improve your digestion, there are a few things your should start doing:

  • Take smaller bites and chew your food thoroughly,
  • Take a digestive enzyme,
  • Add fiber -- soluble and insoluble -- to your diet, and
  • Take a quality probiotic.

A few things you should consider stopping doing are:

  • Drinking lots of cold liquids with meals,
  • Overeating, and
  • Eating when your are stressed.

Changing Your Diet

A lot of what we consume in our Western diet is lacking in nutrients, but - what's more - many of the things we eat and drink can actually irritate and damage the lining of the intestine.

Some of the worst culprits are:

  • refined sugar and anything containing it,
  • soft drinks (regular and diet,)
  • refined white flour,
  • junk food,
  • alcohol, and
  • caffeine.

And although not technically a part of your diet, both prescription and OTC drugs can sometimes damage the gut.

Needless to say, you should always consult with a medical doctor before changing your medical regime in any way.

Restoring Intestinal Integrity with Supplements

Now that you've seen some of the things you should consider dropping from your diet, here are a few to consider adding:

  • L-Glutamine,
  • Slippery Elm,
  • Marshmallow Root,
  • Citrus Bioflavanoids,
  • Aloe Vera Juice, and
  • Omega 3 Essential fatty acids
