- My kids have the leapster 2, I picked that one because it seemed a lot more durable if they were to drop it. If I was spending that kind of money on a pre-schooler, I wanted it to last, and they still have them and they still work great years later.

What Parents Are Saying About Leapfrog and Vtech
Parents Discussion's
My daughter has a Leapster 2 and an Explorer. She plays with and enjoys the Explorer much more than she did the Leapster 2. I think the new system just works better (better touch screen, size, graphics, etc...). She absolutely loves Mr. Pencil - and they recently added an online addition to it you can get with one leaplet card.
We looked at the Mobigo and while the demo stuff at the store worked well and some of the games were very cool (like shreck bowling and toy story's sandbox match) it didn't feel like it was as high of a quality level. We also have a V-tech console at home she barely plays that we were a bit disappointed with.
Leapfrog's stuff is a bit more expensive, but it's also a bit more polished. I've learned the hard way I don't mind spending $5 more on a game if it means it will actually be played. If I spend $20, but she only touches it once I feel like I wasted a lot more.
I am also looking into the Leapfrog Leapster Explorer and the Vtech MobiGo for our 3 yr old son, glad I found this discussion, I will keep reading. I'm leaning towards the MobiGo because I don't think he's advanced enough to use the stylus in the Explorer and I can somehow see him carrying the toy by the stylus (yikes!) He has another toy, a book where he has to use an electronic pen (similar to a stylus), and he doesn't really understand it. I like that the MobiGo has a keyboard. He loves touchscreens also, as he's able to manipulate both his father and my cell phones :/ MobiGo also has a few awards. I DO like the Explorers Learning Path though, great idea. But I think he'll be more ready for that when he's 4. I'm going to have to take a look at these in person. Either or, it will be perfect for our 7hr trips to visit my fam in Montreal. Btw nork, if you're looking for a demo, Target is not usually the place, at least not in my experience (New York City).
Just noticed that the age on the Explorer is 4, I guess I was right without even knowing it, it's too advanced for him. MobiGo it is!
I almost got the Leapster 2 to save a little cash, but everything I read told me the Explorer is superior to the Leapster in lots of ways so I figured I would go ahead and get the latest and greatest this time. :) I am sure whatever you pick, your child will love it. Kids love these handhelds at almost any age. The descriptions on the Leapfrog site will help you decide if a game is educational or not, most of them have several skills involved in "winning" the game. Math. reading, fractions, geography, etc. are just a few of the categories/skills listed on some of them.
I also looked into the differences for my niece...Seems the Mobigo downloadable content does not stay with the system...it's a one time play kinda thing, so you have to keep re-downloading each time your child wants to replay the game....Seems stupid especially if it's a game they really like. Do you want to keep hooking it up to the internet to re-download this 6x's a day? My daughter had the original Leapster and got many years of use out of it. The other cool thing with the new Leapster Explorer is that is had a camera attachment and can hold 1000 photos and the kids can play with the pictures and add things to the pictures and they can also be printed. My pick for my niece is the Explorer!
