LeapFrog does it again

In this review we'll have a look a the LeapPad Explorer, 2012 Toy of the year, and one the first of the tablet style learning game systems for kids on the market.

Compared to its predecessor (the popular Leapster Explorer), the LeapPad has a much larger 5" touch screen, more memory, and a built-in camera and video recorder.

Because of these features and obviously the well-respected LeapFrog brand behind the device, this iPad for kids was a smash hit this past holiday season and still is one of the hottest educational game tablet systems today.

The LeapPad retails for $99 or less, while games can be had for less than $15 (!)

Let's have a look and review all of the exciting features the LeapPad Explorer has to offer.

.

It Looks nice!

(8000 words worth of eye-candy)

Features and Specs

Building upon the success of the 2010 Leapster Explorer, the new LeapPad delivers more fun, more technology and more learning games.

The specs for the Leappad Explorer are rather impressive. Available in the familiar LeapFrog green and pink colors, the system sports:

  • Crisp looking, large 5" color touch screen (480 x 272 resolution)
  • Built in accelerometer sensor for shake / tilt detection
  • Built-in camera
  • Built-in video recorder
  • Built-in microphone
  • 2 Gigabytes of internal memory allowing for storage of thousands of pictures
  • Input with included stylus or use your fingers
  • Full compatibility with the existing library of 100+ games, apps, and e-books for the Leapster Explorer (in case you're confused by "clever" marketing: these need to be purchased separately !!!)
  • Pre-loaded with Animation Studio, Art Studio and Story Studio
  • Supports multiple, customizable kid profiles that can be set to different skill levels
  • Games, E-books that adapt to skill level of child
Based on these features alone it should be clear that LeapFrog has a winner here. And a winner it was, at the Toy Industry Association's Toy of the Year awards:

Toy of the Year 2012   Educational Toy of the Year 2012   Pre-school Toy of the Year 2012

The LeapPad won in three categories; it was the overall winner and won the coveted Toy of the Year 2012 award, it won in the Educational Toys category and also got the award for Best Pre-School Toy!

A Learning Tablet

(big words for a toy?)

The LeapPad Explorer is marketed as a Learning Tablet for Kids, and considering LeapFrog's specialty in developing outstanding Educational Toys I can agree with that label.

All of the content that is available for the Explorer line of products (in the form of cartridges, downloadable apps, books, etc) addresses the development of specific skills in science, language, math and reasoning.

LeapPad Explorer Game - Brave

Skill-building exercises are cleverly packaged into fun games and activities, oftentimes featuring creatures, characters and story lines your kids may already love or be familiar with (Dora, Toy Story, Scooby Doo, etc).

Another nice feature is that for several of the games and books, the software adapts to the skill level of your child, based on the child's profile settings (Pre-K through 3rd grade).

Learning while gaming, gaming while learning, a sweet double-edged sword it is!

The LeapPad Tablet & Learning Path

See how they learn!

Now that we mentioned the learning aspect of the LeapPad, let's take a look at Learning Path.

Like many of the other LeapFrog learning toys, the Leappad Explorer is Learning Path enabled. Learning Path is a software application that comes with the device, and is used to monitor activity and accomplishments.

The kinds of things you can track with Learning Path are things like which games were played, for how ling, scores for quizzes, skill level improvements, etc.

Based on these facts you can reward your child for certain accomplishments and learning activities with printable reward style goodies.

So far, what do you think about the LeapPad?

Camera and Video Recorder Built In

LeapPad Explorer - Pink with Built-in CameraThe LeapPad Explorer is equipped with a built-in camera / video recorder, which I think is a huge deal, and it is the feature that sets the LeapPad apart from its direct competitor, the lower-priced VTech InnoTab Learning Tablet ($79 retail).

Owners of the 2010 Leapster Explorer know that to turn it into a still / video camera you had to buy a somewhat clunky camera add-on for $24.95, so it's nice to see it built-in with the LeapPad.

I'm glad that LeapFrog decided to have the camera option built in, working straight out of the box. It makes for a much more versatile device that will spur more creative moments because the camera is readily available at the child's fingertips.

The 5" screen makes for a nice big view finder, the "click" button is a nice size and conveniently positioned and with 2GB internal memory lots of pictures and videos can be stored on the LeapPad.

The LeapPad includes some basic (sufficient) image manipulation tools that provide kids with ways to alter the images they take by drawing on them, adding text, etc - all on the device. Fun stuff.

Compatible with Leapster Explorer Games!

Good news if you're upgrading

When the Leapster Explorer came out last year, a lot of people were very disappointed to find out that it was not backwards compatible with the older Leapster 2 games.

This time around things are different and the new LeapPad Explorer is 100% compatible with all Leapster Explorer games, downloadable apps, flash cards, videos etc, which is very good news if you spent a good amount of money on those.

So far there are about 25 different game cartridges available, as well as a host of downloadable apps such as mini games, flash cards, e-books and videos. Downloadable apps can be purchased through the LeapFrog Connect software application that comes with the LeapPad.

Some people commented on this below, but please note that older Leapster 2 games are NOT compatible with the LeapPad or Leapster Explorer!

LeapPad vs Leapster Explorer

The LeapPad is obviously better than its predecessor, but also more expensive. Depending on what you are looking for, one may be a better choice than the other.

Important!

100+ Games with the LeapPad?

On many retailers' web sites you will see a product description that includes:

"Features a library of 100+ games, digital books, videos and flash cards (works with all Leapster Explorer games and apps)."

However, please note that the LeapPad comes with just 4 main apps pre-installed. Four, and that's it.

The rest of the library of 100+ games, e-books, apps and videos need to be purchased separately!

No new memory can be added to the leappad. There is an option on your leapfrog homepage to see what applications you have downloaded onto your leappad. You can go through and unselect certain apps that are not needed or your child simply doesn't have an interest in anymore. You do not lose any of the apps that you downloaded, they just wont be useable unless you re-download them back to the leappad. You can download everything to 2 different leappad/explorer.

That is exactly one of the points I do not like about the LeapPad, and other Leapfrog products like the Leapster - you can't add memory, like with the Innotab. It's a shame they chose that path, and if they're smart they'll change that in new LeapPad versions coming out this year.

So it doesn't look like I can use the Leapster 2 games (all 7 of them purchased) can be used with this new device. That sucks.

I feel the same way... I will be returning this tomorrow... I already have the the explorer and I purchased the leappad with the idea of being able to use all the cartriges like the leapster 2. I could of sworn that its states you could use the leapter 2 cartridges in the leapster section at the store. Really bummed out!!!
  • TechDad May 31, 2012 @ 1:05 pm | delete
Leapster 2 games are indeed not supported, Explorer cartridges should work fine. I'll add a 'warning' to this review to reflect this, like I did in my Leapster Explorer review.

LeapPad Explorer Pre-Order Information

all pre-orders "sold out" as of 07/13/2011

Update 08-24-2011

The LeapPad is now available and in stock in many places, including Amazon, Toys R Us, Walmart etc.

Update (07-13-2011)

As far as I can see, LeapFrog is playing a silly hype marketing game. Pre-orders were available at various sites, but have very quickly sold out or completely disappeared from the sites.

Deliberate, or just plain old enormous demand that was not anticipated? Are you kidding me LeapFrog ?

LeapFrog was not set to have pre-orders available until 08/01, as per this screenshot from their site from earlier this week:

And now (07/13/2011), the LeapFrog site has this:

There never was a pre-order option on the LeapFrog site, so it did not end early; it never happened.

Silly.

The previously available LeapPad Explorer (pre-order) on Amazon mysteriously disappeared.

At Toys R Us, Walmart and K-Mart, the pre-orders show to be sold out .

The only place I could find where you still can get a green or pink LeapPad Explorer pre-order unit is Barnes and Nobleicon. At Barnes and Noble, the pre-order units also disappeared
