Learn About Spearfishing

Be in clear water with the appropriate gear. Make sure there are fish around, and you know which ones are good to eat. Find one that's meandering, perhaps eating some seaweed, not yet concerned with your presence.

Enable the safety on your speargun then cock your spear. Take a deep breath, Invert your body, legs into the air, and let your weight push you toward the bottom. If you are wearing a wetsuit you will need a weight belt. Take care not to kick your legs while not completely submerged, and then only make slight movements so as not to frighten your prey.

Reach the bottom and creep slowly toward the fish, using your free hand to pull yourself along the bottom. Kick your legs only very slightly, and ideally when behind a rock that the fish cannot see past.

Extend your arm halfway out so that there's some room to lengthen your reach at the final moment of attack. Once you've established that the fish is within range of the fully released spear, extend your arm and release the spear in one smooth movement, aiming for the head of the fish.

Spear your prey, kick yourself quickly to the fish, grabbing it, or the protruding point of the spear to secure this flapping menace, and make for the surface, when at the surface dispatch of the fish humanly.

It is also possible to spearfish from the surface, using the same equipment, but rarely diving, and using your snorkel to breathe. This is called surface spearing, and is a good way to get acquainted to the sport, without "jumping in" right away.
