Learn Acoustic Guitar
There is some kind of raw emotional power of a good song, stripped down to its essence and performed on stage with minimal backing. You just can't beat the sound of a well made acoustic guitar with fresh strings, played by a real master. Simply beautiful!
Over the past 5 or 6 years I've really concentrated on learning the basics of acoustic guitar. My theory is that if I learn acoustic guitar it will help me to learn electric guitar too.
To the beginner just starting to learn guitar, it must seem like there are a thousand things to learn:
- Guitar speak - truss rod, frets, bridge, head etc!
- Rhythm/timing - how confusing are time signatures? What is a meter? etc
- Melody, chords, scales and modes
- Techniques - Finger picking, Strumming, tapping, hammer-ons etc!
- Different styles - jazz, folk, pop, classical, blues, slide etc
- Equipment - plectrums, capos, tuners, slides
- Different types of guitar - acoustic, semi acoustic, electro-acoustic
Well, who wouldn't feel overwhelmed by all of the above! It would be a real shame for a keen beginner to be put off starting, or even give up simply because there is so much to learn in the beginning.
With a little dedication and some disciplined practice who knows where it could lead!
Here are some tips for any beginner wishing to learn acoustic guitar:
1) Learn on an acoustic guitar - it's easier than trying to switch from an electric guitar
2) Get a decent guitar - one that sounds good
3) Tune your guitar each time you pick it up
4) Use a metronome or backing track
5) Make it fun by learning songs as well as techniques
6) Practice religiously - it's the only way to become a guitar god!
I created this lens to help point people in the right direction so that they can just worry about how they are going to show off their new skills after they learn acoustic guitar. Hope it helps!
