What Is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate Marketing is when you sign up to promote someone else's products for a share in the revenue known as a commission. You can promote it in a variety of ways - through a blog, your own website, or even social networking sites like this Squidoo lens!

Affiliate marketing isn't just for people who don't have a business of their own. Many online marketers work as affiliates to promote products that complement their own. For instance if you sell tropical fish through your website, you would benefit from an affiliation with a popular website that sells an eBook on the care and feeding of tropical fish.

As you can see, affiliate marketing has many advantages for both you and the merchant. There are three ways you can earn money through affiliate marketing:

Pay per click For each visitor you send to the merchant site, you receive a small previously agreed upon amount.

Pay per sale For each visitor that makes a purchase through the merchant you're promoting, you receive a set commission.

Pay per lead For each prospective customer that registers at the website (perhaps for free information or a trial run), you earn a small amount.

Affiliate marketing isn't another get rich scheme. You won't grow rich by just placing a few ad banners on your website. But if you're willing to invest the time and energy into helping consumers find products and services they really need, you can reap the rewards.

Getting Into Affiliate Marketing

Once you've taken the time to learn and understand the world of affiliate marketing, you may feel you're ready to launch your own website. But before you launch your website or get involved in affiliate marketing, here are a few extra considerations:

Choose the right niche. Affiliate marketing can be a competitive field. It's important to find a niche that is just the right size. Choose a niche that isn't too crowded but isn't too sparse either.

Buy your own domain. Having your own domain looks more professional than choosing an option through a subdomain (example greatgifts.wordpress.com). For a small fee, you can often choose to buy your own domain through most hosting companies (Wordpress offers this feature).

Consider the season. If you run a travel website, you may not receive even cash flow throughout the year. That's not to say you shouldn't or can't enter a seasonal field, but you do need to remember you probably won't be retiring on the revenue from a seasonal website.

Set up a content feed. If you blog or use another type of syndicated feed such as a podcast, use a feed reader to offer your visitors the option to receive your posts. Visitors that are subscribers are likely to visit again and again. Through the use of feed readers, you can develop a long-term business relationship with an email client. Most feed readers are free and only require a little time and patient to install. All you have to do is set it up and watch your email list grow longer. Two popular free feed readers are Feedblitz and Feedburner.

Using these extra affiliate marketing tips, you'll be well on your way to earning as a product promoter in no time at all!

"Over the last few years, I have seen so many of my favorite bloggers and new websites become popular enough that their owners have quit their day jobs, and I always wondered how they got their ideas or how they got started. I want what they have, but I had no idea how to get there from here.

Fox's book was just the kick in the pants I needed. I am very familiar with the computer and the internet, but am low on techy skills, inspiration, and knowledge about how to build an online business.

This book was awesome because he details what others have done to achieve success, the steps one must take and the work involved in each kind of online business, the different types of business and what business model is most suitable each kind.

Then, in addition to all that, he provides the questions and inspiration needed to jog our own thoughts about what we might be passionate or knowledgeable enough about to start a business, and has such perfect memory and inspiration jogs that I went from not having any ideas to having too many to reasonably act on immediately.

He focuses on all the different kinds of e-business, so you don't need an item to sell or a particular idea in mind to get started with this book. Rather, this book is perfect for those who have some interest in owning their own online business but need to know more about what exactly it entails and how one would make a business like this profitable.

I tried the Dummies book on this topic and was sorely disappointed - it felt like a big advertisement through the whole book, and didn't really give me any of the tools I needed to get going or to inspire me with a new idea to act on. I'd recommend Fox's book instead, as the first book to read if you are thinking of starting an online business."

Making Money as an Affiliate Marketer

Once you've set up your website and you've read up on affiliate marketing, you'll be happily involved with a network that you've chosen to help you earn money online.

So what next? Your next step should be to concentrate on promoting your website to potential customers. You can do that by following these easy traffic generation tips for affiliate marketers:

Don't fill pages with banners alone. Websites filled with pages and pages of banners are viewed as spam and filtered out of most search engines promptly. Plus, websites filled with banners gain a bad reputation on the Internet.

Avoid using pop-up ads that won't close. Pop-up advertisements can infuriate people when they have to chase them down to close them. They're often considered an annoyance and hastily closed, so many affiliates avoid them completely. Next time you encounter a website with pop-up advertisements, ask yourself if you even remember the ad you closed.

Write relevant content. Search engines robots can't recognize pictures or banners, which is why it's important to have relevant content. When a potential visitor clicks on your website, their first question is, "What's in it for me?" You must answer this question quickly or lose your visitor.

Submit your website. Submit it to popular search engines such as Yahoo, Google and MSN. All of the pages on the web eventually get crawled by search engine robots but the sooner your website gets crawled, the sooner it begins to appear in the popular search engines. Not submitting your website to search engines is like standing at the back of a long line when you've already been invited to the front.

Follow these four tips and you'll be on your way to sure success as an affiliate marketer!
