Learn Arabic
Learn Arabic - You too can be speaking Arab in a few weeks from now: Numerous studies have revealed that in any language, native-speakers use only about 2500 different words and phrases on a daily basis. Dr. Pimsleur spent his lifetime studying these language building blocks.
With the Pimsleur approach, it's not how many words you know, but rather, which words you can use. By aiming each lesson at teaching you to use those 2500 words, the Pimsleur approach teaches you to speak the most Arabic in the least amount of time.

What Arabic Language To Learn?
Using standard Arabic in everyday conversation sounds a bit formal to Arab ears, but at least you can be sure of being understood by educated Arabs anywhere in the Middle East. It may be more difficult to understand what they say to you, unless they make the effort to speak more formally than usual. Having learnt some standard Arabic, however, it is relatively easy to adapt to a local dialect later.
Among the dialects, Egyptian and Levantine (spoken by Lebanese, Syrians, Jordanians and Palestinians) are the most widely understood outside their specific area. Colloquial Moroccan, on the other hand, is of little use outside the Maghreb.

Arabic-English Dictionary
Arabic-English Dictionary: The Hans Wehr Dictionary of Modern Written Arabic
Amazon Price: $40.50 (as of 08/08/2008)
List Price: $45.00
First, I must say this is the only Modern Written Arabic (MWA) - English dictionary that the student of Arabic has to have. Others, Al-Mawrid, for example, are useful as supplements, and contain new vocabulary, and there is a more recent German edition (5th edition) of Wehr published by Harrassowitz, but this book has a standard of scholarship unrivalled by any other MWA-English dictionary. Middle Eastern published MWA-English dictionaries like Mawrid, for example, don't give the grammatical information learners of Arabic need, such as broken plurals, verbal vowelling, verbal nouns (masdars), let alone how verbs are used with prepositions, all of which Wehr tells the user. -- J. E. S. Leake "sailor and scholar" (Worcester England)
