Enhance Your Italian Experience by Learning The Language Before You Go!!

When I went to Italy I spent months planning my trip, I only wish I had spent half that time to Learn Basic Travel Italian! I did use some tapes to try and learn the basics, but constant repetition was not the best way for me to learn, and I found I could only remember the specific sentences I was taught. I was not able to put together my own sentences, so if the things I learned did not apply, I was without communication skills. I am not one to listen over and over to a disk and learn. I need to interact, speak with others, see and say, that works much better for me. I wish I knew about Rocket Languages Italian Program before my trip to Italy.

We arrived first in Venice. Oh my Goodness! What an amazing little City. You can't get lost for long. All canals and streets, no cars, the only way off is by boat. You can wander for hours off the main streets you will find quaint stores, places to eat, local hangouts and little piazza's that harken back to medieval times. There are four distinct districts, or regions of the main island of Venice, San Marco, Santa Croce, Cannaregio, Castello and Dorsoduro. Each district or region has it's own charm and sites.

If you go during the main tourist season, which I do not recommend, make sure you venture just a few streets off the main fairways clogged with tourists. You will find peace, much better places to eat, better priced stores, less expensive places to stay and the local places that are pure magic. Being able to speak the language in bigger cites like Venice, Rome, Milan is not as essential, but for me, an attempt to say the basics (Thank You, Please, Hello, Excuse Me, Goodbye, How much is this, Good Morning, etc.) is a way of showing respect to the people whose country I am visiting. In the smaller towns of Italy, however, you will find a lot of people who speak ONLY Italian. This is why I highly recommend learning at least some basics of the language before you go.

You will feel more confident, comfortable, accomplished and your trip will be so much more rewarding if you can speak at least the basics of the language. The people of Italy are wonderful, they are so friendly and welcoming. They really appreciate it when they see you have taken the time to learn some of their language.

Learning To Speak Italian is Easier Than You Think!

Why Rocket Italian? What You're Getting!

Learning another language can seem intimidating and frustrating, but that really depends on how bad you want it and if you have the right leaning system. When I first went to Italy, I was learning the language (I use the term learning very loosely) by listening to audio tapes on my iPod. I would have to listen to a whole conversation, then they would break it down into words and sentences and I would have to repeat in the pauses. This for me was a terrible way to learn. First of all, I was only learning the specific phrases I was repeating. Secondly, I do not lean well just parroting a CD or tape recording. Thirdly, by the time I actually got to Italy, I could only remember the basics like, please, hello, good bye, excuse me, etc.

At the time I could not afford the software I really wanted to learn the language, t was over $200+ for just Level 1. I had heard that they taught through interaction, on the computer, with association, games and speech recognition pronunciation. Sounded much more my way to learn, but I just could not afford it.

Since then, I am happy to say, I have found a language software that is very similar to this other very expensive language learning system, but costs less than half. This is what I now use whenever I want to learn the basics, or more in any foreign language. It works, it costs less, has a 60 day money back guarantee, teaches dynamically, and interactively and it WORKS!!!

So if you need to learn another language, either just the basics for travel, or more advanced skills, I would recommend you at least check out Rocket Languages for yourself. You can try it for 60 days and if you do not feel it is working for you, get a full refund. It is as simple as that. It either works for you, or you get your money back. To me that says the company is confident that their system will work, and they are willing to guarantee it.

The software also teaches you about the culture and customs of the country whose language you are learning. It is really much more than just a language software.

The games are fun and really help imprint the language in your memory for easy recall later. This really is the only way to learn a language. They offer quizzes and self-tests so you can gauge your progress along the way.

There is even a forum where you can go and speak with actual native Italian speakers, other students like yourself and Italian teachers. And the forum is open 24/7.

Learn at your own pace, in your own time. Whether late at night, early morning, mid-day, your software is waiting for you and knows where you left off, so you don't have to remember where you were in the course. The course consists of easy-to-manage sections and user-friendly navigation that guide you on the recommended learning path.

All of your course materials are available online 24/7 in the Rocket Italian Premium members' area, so you can learn at your own pace, in your own time.

Featured Locations #1 - Venice

The Island City

Venice, the city built on water. This is an amazing place to visit. You can wander for hours and find hidden Piazzas and beautiful old buildings, quaint cafes and wonderful little shops. It is a magical city. One I will return to many times. I recommend going right at the start of tourist season (Early May) or the tail end (Early September), as it can get quite hot in July/August and the tourist choke the main through fares. If you sty a few days, you will find the tourists mainly leave after 4:00pm when the ships pull out, and then you have the city much more to yourself. Don't miss going to Harry's Bar and getting a bellini, and hit all the major sites as soon as they open in the morning, before the tourist from the ships start lining up.

Featured Locations #2 - Cinque Terre

Amazing Pastel Villages Cascading Down Cliffs Above The Sea

The Cinque Terre (The Five Lands) are five little coastal villages that will take you back in time. Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Don't expect luxury hotels by the sea, that is not what this place is about. In fact only one of the five villages has any semblance of hotels as we American's determine them. But, you won't want to send time in the room anyway. The people are friendly, the food right from the sea, the shops, cafes and restaurants small and quaint. A modern train whisks you from one town to the next, but there is a walkway between the towns as well, which is a great ocean view stroll. A place not to be missed! We even bumped into Rick Steve's in Riomaggiore as we walked down the street.

Featured Locations #3 - Hill Towns of Italy

Beatiful, Fortified Medeval Towns Pearched on Top of Hills

You could wander for days in a rental car, from small hill town to small hill town in Tuscany. They are magical, restful, quaint and the people are wonderful. But make sure you know some Italian, because most of the locals in these small towns don't speak English.

Milan & Lake Como - You Gotta Go!

An Extra Video of Milan & Lake Como

Milan, the center of Italian Fashion. Shop till you drop, and make sure to bring lots of dough. Then travel North to the Lakes for a relaxing few days in old paradise. The beauty of Lake Como is astonishing, with the old palatial homes perched at waters edge, in summer most dripping with flowers. So Romantic! It feels like Gone with the Wind, Italian Style!

Pack Light! To Get Around Easy!

There Are NO Elevators in Tuscany!

Make sure to pack lite! Remember this is not America. Most of the small towns have steep winding cobble stone streets, lots of crumbly steps and NO Elevators. Even wheeled luggage can be tough at time, as your arm gets jiggled out of the socket on the cobble stone streets. And the steps, don't get me started. I suggest something you can sling over your back! Check out these travel lite essentials!

Rick's Advice for Packing Light

Some Good Advice!

As a woman, I cannot pack quite this light, but it is a good place to start. Women need at least 3 pairs of shoes Rick! And a dress, skirt, capri's.... I guess I am still a student of packing light.

An Awesome Resource for European Travel

Advice, DVD's, Travel Books, Travel Items, News, etc.

Rick Steve's Travel Website
A great resource for European Travel. I used all Rick Steve's Books and Videos for my trip to Italy. I booked hotels, ate in restaurants and saw sites he recommended. I was not disappointed.

Some Recommended Travel Guide Books

I Have Used These, And They Are Great!

Rick's advice on tearing out the pages of the guide books and bringing only the critical sections you need is great! As an advid book lover, I was horrified when I first heard this, destroy a book, sacrilege! But, I relented when I viewed my pile of guide books (I am also and avid travel researcher). I was thankful when I arrived that I had done this, since guide books are updated every year, what does it matter? By the time I plan to go back, I will need to buy a new updated version anyway!

One of the most difficult things that our friends share to us every after their Italy vacations are their funny and challenging experiences in communicating with the locals. They do a lot of hand action to relate to people who also have the difficulty speaking English.
