Beekeeping for beginners

If you are all new to beekeeping but fascinated by the concept of collecting honey from your own hives then here are some things that can get you started. First know what you are getting into. Beekeeping is not easy and there is a lot of learning you have to do to get the honey flowing. The most important step is getting ready to handle bees. To start with, not every one feels at ease handling these furry insects. But once you start you can really get to loving them.

Getting the bee keeping equipment ready

For beekeeping you need the following equipment as bare minimum:
* Bees- Buy some to get started
* Hives- for keeping bees
* A veil- keeps the bees from crawling on your face or stinging
* A hive tool -useful in handling hives
* A bee smoker- helps keep the bees calm while removing the hive
* Extractor- Usually hand powered one are available that are reasonably priced

Many people do not mind having scores of bees crawling over them or maybe once in a while getting stung. Others prefer to protect themselves. But I advice you to get good protection and even think of getting a bee suit and gloves till you actually lose the initial awkwardness and fear. If you are cal the bees will also generally be calm and allow you to do your work.

Understanding the honey cycle

As a beginner you need to get some insight on the process of beekeeping. Beekeeping involves maintaining hives and maintaining the productivity of the bees. Spring time is the time to get he hives ready, identify the queen bee and ensure that she lays eggs. Around June the honey collection starts, now you have to make sure that you have the hives filling up. August is the time to get ready for winter. It is better to the bees indoors by October.

Beekeeping tips to extract honey

Extracting the honey
Once you take the hives out you can use a brush to wipe away the bees on it and then use the honey extractor to get the honey out. The hand powered ones are sufficient but you can also go with the extractors that are motor powered.

Beekeeping for dummies

Unlike the popular concept of beekeeping as an arduorous task, it can be a quite exciting activity.
Of course you do have to understand that you are dealing with bees and it is necessary to have some amount of patience and toil. Nevertheless, all is forgotten and there is nothing but rejoicing when you manage to collect you first bottle of honey from your very own hives.

Beekeeping is for everybody as long as they are willing to face and overcome their fear of getting stung as well as start developing some respect for these furry insects. They are not a lot of work. You just have to check on them and ensure the colony and the queen is fine.
