Overcome blocks to self expression in any language

The Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a form of emotional acupuncture that is free and easy to learn and can be self-applied. This lens explains how EFT can be used when learning a second language or anytime we have trouble expressing ourselves.

How to use EFT to make learning english easier

Be free to express yourself

A recent client, lets call her 'Bonnie', came to see me regarding other matters but was also struggling to express herself in English which was not her native language.

When I asked Bonnie to describe the frustration she described a large bubble with a very small rectangular window in it. The bubble represented her ability to be articulate and make herself understood in her native language and the small window represented what she was capable of expressing in English.

We tapped on the frustration of learning and using English, the frustration of not being able to express herself, and not being able to make herself clearly understood. After each round of tapping, when she imagined the bubble and the window, the window would be larger and larger.

In the following week, Bonnie reported being much more relaxed in her ability to talk in English and found that the words flowed more easily.

Even if English is your primary language we all feel frustrated at times with our ability to express what we're thinking or feeling. See if you can remember a specific situation in which you struggle to express yourself and try some of these phrases:
  • Even though I struggle to say what I'm feeling, I choose to stay calm.

  • Even though I get flustered under pressure and blurt out something I don't mean and hurt others, I choose to forgive myself for saying these things.

  • Even though I'm hurt when others don't understand how I'm feeling, I completely love and accept myself and take responsibility for my part in communicating how I feel.

  • Even though I don't think I'm smart enough to use fancy words to explain myself, I choose to remember that $5 words can be just as effective as $50 words.
