And You Thought Face Painting Was Just For Kids!

Learning face painting is the ultimate in fun. Not just for kids but for anybody who has a little kid inside just waiting to get out.

Face painting is a lucrative business that spreads smiles and giggles where ever they appear. They can be seen at company picnics, corporate events, fundraisers, even birthday parties, fairs and festivals. Face painting is not just for birthday parties anymore.

People are making tons of money painting the faces of CEOs, presidents, employee, teens and kids, too. For the most part your hours are your own, you get to work in the entertainment industry and best of all, it's a fun job.

You can't even call it a job because face painters are the happiest people you'll ever see.

What Do You Need To Be A Face Painter?

Well, of course, you need paints. Always use not-toxic paint. Especial on kid's skin which is very sensitive. Some kids can have an allergic reaction or get a rash on the skin.

Using non-toxic paint will help to minimize any problems. Choose face paint in pots, crayon form, or both for fun and decorative creative face art.

There are several brands to choose from and most craft supply stores will carry them. They are labeled face paint but be sure to check for the FDA approval before using any off brands of face paint.

The only other thing you need to be a face painter is your creativity.

Here's what Katie C of Suburbia, MA United States has to say about this book:

I bought this set about 10 years ago as I was asked to do some face painting at an MDA fund raiser. I absolutely loved it! The instructions were so simple, they make a beginner look like a pro! They encourage creativity in each design, so I began to elaborate on their ideas and started to get better and better. Eventually I began to do birthday parties and the such and now, believe it or not, I charge $75 to $100 an HOUR for my face painting!! I am a PROFESSIONAL FACE PAINTER and I swear I have this book to thank for it. Granted, my paintings are now comparable to the Broadway show "Cats." But I still have my book and my original pallette of paint that came with it, although the book is now being held together with some string and twist-ties! Thank you, Klutz!! (p.s. I have NEVER had ANY trouble washing these paints off.)

The Dos And Don'ts Of Face Painting

Dos

Use only FDA-compliant Face Paints, Glitter and other supplies or make your own

Buy the brightest, boldest colors you can find! And glitter, lots of glitter!

Carry extra ingredients to make face paint in case you run out (recipes below)

For outdoor face painting put your face paints on ice (or a freezer block) to minimize melting.

Use different paintbrushes for each color of Face Paint

Rinse your face paint brushes and other tools with clean water after each use

Practice, Practice, Practice!

Don'ts

Do not use face paints on someone with cuts, abrasions, rash or sensitive skin. Paint their arms, wrists or leg instead

DO NOT use craft paints or acrylic paints instead of authentic face paints

And don't worry and have fun! Everyone is very forgiving and the process of having their face painted is almost as fun as the end result!

Here's what Bobbie Gleason (u.s.a.) Says

I LOVE this book. Yes, it is a little small, smaller than I thought it would be but it is jammed packed with ideas. Great inspiration for colors and shapes. Love the little quotes on each page. Nice touch. With your own creativeness you can make great mystical butterflies. Practice on a kid for free. Again I love the book great addition to your painting library and I am ordering Marcela's book on Face Painting Fairies and I am sure I will be just as happy.

Eeek! I Can't Think Of Any New Ideas For Face Painting

Can't think of anything new to design? Look no further than your television or the movie theater. What ever the hottest kids' movie is playing is something kids will want painted on their faces.
The latest cartoons, animations, manga books, and the newest kid's novel. Do you know how many kids had Harry Potter painted on their faces after his movies come out? Me neither but from the gigs I did I can tell you almost every kid want something from Harry Potter on their face.

Don't forget the really little ones. Preschooler's favorite television shows are always in demand. Of course, it means you have to watch morning cartoons (no biggy there) or PBS but it will keep you amused while you practice drawing the characters.

Face Painting on the Little Ones

Run Out Of Ideas For A Party? Kids Having A Reaction To Paint! No Problem!

Always have a backup design in case the one you want to use are booed. Especial if it's a kid's party. If the Mona Lisa is not to their liking you can always fall back on the clown face. It can be happy, sad, goofy, or scary and it's always a favorite with kids.

The bright red nose, larger than life red or blue mouth will always be a big hit with the little ones.

For the little girls a good and solid fallback is the fairy princess. A few feathery lines around the eyes with starbursts at the end of the lines and glitter. Lots and lots of glitter.

If one or more of the kids are having a reaction to the face paint, use your homemade paint on them and make a bracelet or necklace so they won't feel left out. A little painted heart on a charm bracelet or necklace will have them happy as a clam.

The possibilities for face painting designs are endless. Try not to get caught up with the elaborate work that professional face painters do or save it for the professional gigs. For a single birthday party, or just having fun with your kids, simple face painting designs can be just the thing to bring out that smile on a kids' face.

The Scariest Little Things

Safety And Boredom Go Hand-In-Hand

One of the best ways to check if the kids (or adults) can take the face paint on their skin is to do a test face paint. While the kids are standing in line give them something to do "else they'll terrorized the city" if they get bored. I like to use temporary tattoos---the sheets don't cost much and they keep the kids occupied while they wait.

There's also marbles (if their old enough), color books (where they can get ideas), balloons (make animals), paper hats, and any number of little things that will keep them occupied while waiting their turn to have their face painted.

What I do before painting any kids is check to see if they have rashes or any open sores on their face. If all is okay then I put a dab of paint on their cheek, forehead, or chin then check it when they it's their turn to be painted. If all is okay I paint them. If not, I use my homemade paint or offer them a temporary tattoo. Very few kids have a reaction to the homemade paint.

What's This Stuff On My Kid's Face?

Most of the face paints will clean up with soap and water even the homemade recipes. But you should read the instructions on the paint you bought. Just in case soap and water is not enough.

Baby wipes are helpful and makeup remover wipes are also good to use. Most kids want to go home with their new face on so sending a note or flyer with the kids on "how to remove" is always a good idea.

A lot of the times I have my business cards printed with directions on the back on "how to remove". Helps to drum up business, too. (wink, wink)

Awsome, would love to do this with the kids. Only problem now is that my smallest girl gets really scarred when she sees anyone face painted...
