Your post is excellent. I’m running a blog about mnemonic devices and you know how to teach this topic. Mnemonic devices are my passion so I’ve decided to start a blog about this. I think I will come back very soon to share more ideas. Of course, if you want.

    Thank you,

  • Joie Feb 14, 2012 @ 12:39 pm | delete
I learned many of the same ones you did!

When I home-schooled my daughter, I made up a "Planet Song" to the tune of "Old MacDonald":
    Planets go around the sun,
    E-I, E-I, O!
Learning them is so much fun,
    E-I, E-I, O!
    Mercury, Venus
    Earth, Mars Jupiter,
    Saturn, Uranus
    Neptune, Pluto
    Planets go around the sun,
    E-I, E-I, O!
Then each planet had a little verse of its own, simply stating a little fact about that planet.
I still find myself humming it when I'm trying to remember something about a planet and its relation to the other planets. :) Memories...

I never learned the 'Our 50 States' song, but my daughter did in 5th grade and I remember being so impressed she could rattle them all off in alphabetical order -- and still can all these years later. Most of the others I remember from childhood - learning with mnemonics makes things easy to remember.

Great work as usual Ohme! These mnemonics are perfect tools for an old f...uh.. guy like me who someone wrote this poem about:

Just a line to say to say I'm living,
that I'm not among the dead
    Though I'm getting more forgetful,
    and mixed up in my head;

I've got used to my arthritis,
    To my dentures I'm resigned.
    I can manage my bifocals,
But, Oh God, I miss my mind.

Please remember that I love you,
    And I wish that you were here;
But now it's nearly mail time,
So I must say goodbye, my dear.

Now here I stand beside the mailbox,
With my face so very red,
Instead of mailing you my letter,
    I have opened it instead!

This is so great!!! You helped me study like this when we were roommates at JSU...I had forgotten how you made learning such fun.
  • GrowWear Oct 27, 2009 @ 5:55 pm | delete
    One I remember is:

    "I" before "E" except after "C"
Or when it sounds like "A"
    As in "neighbor" and "weigh."

Lots of exceptions to the rule, but it does help.

Love learning stuff with acronyms, rhymes, and songs. :D

I've never learned the months one so I'm really glad you've got it here :-). Here's a funny story. When I was very young like 5 o 6 we always watched School House Rock. Then it went off air or something and I didn't watch it anymore...til 30 years later when I found all the songs on video. Would you believe that I remembered EVERY SINGLE WORD TO EVERY SINGLE SONG - 30 years later! Now that is proof mnemonics work!
  • Janiece Oct 27, 2009 @ 2:39 pm | delete
What a great lens!! I often created my own mnemonics in high school and college. As a parent, I've helped my kids come up with some that help them memorize whatever they are needing/wanting to learn.

FAbulous fun! and I learned like Jude too. In fact, I still sing the books of the Bible when I am looking for something! Wish I could find the OT one the way we learned it. I had a great one when I was teaching Sunday School too.
