Free French Courses
Ranked #7,861 in Education, #171,841 overall
Something called free lunch?
Depends how you define it. It is definitely not possible to learn language, or for that matter acquire any skill, for free. You need to put in time and effort. But what about the cost of learning material? It could be prohibitively expensive. The cost alone could deflate your desire to learn the French language. Just check out the prices of any of the good courses like Pimsleur or Rossetta Stone.
There are numerous online French language courses. These are either too expensive or the free material available is of poorer quality. Besides, there is always a catch. You can learn more only if you subscribe to the premium subscription. No good!
So, I have decided to build a lens to give you access to high-quality French Learning material - absolutely free. In my experience, the information that is contained in this lens will guarantee that you will be able to translate simple English statements into French. translate simple French to English, express yourself in French in small simple sentences and understand someone speak French, if spoken slowly. Worst case: you will be able to tell a French person to peak slowly or better still you could tell that person that you are learning and understand French a little.
Bon Courage.

... please note that I do not gain financially by directing traffic to these sites. I have used these French courses; I enjoy learning the French language using these courses, and therefore this lens.
Free High Quality French Courses
Here's the list ...
- 1. Coffee Break French
The basic membership is absolutely free. It comprises of 80 20-minute lessons. The quality is top class and caters to all levels of proficiency. And you will love Mark's (the teacher) and Anna's (the student) voice. The course is easy paced. As a bonus you will get used to the Scottish accent also. Caution: the lessons are so good that you may end up buying their premium subscription.
Note: They have recently launched season 3 of Coffee Break French - a set of 40 podcasts teaching intermediate French.- 2. Walk, Talk and Learn French
This is a series of 10 (8 lessons + 2 introductions) video podcast, where the absolutely hilarious Pierre Benoit takes you to the streets of Paris and teaches you French Grammar. Who knew learning grammar could be so much fun. This for those who have some French learning experience.
- 3. Mission Paris
Designed as a computer game, this course takes you through the streets of Paris, where Eva, the heroine of the episodes, is desperately trying to save France from a grave disaster. During her heroic effort to do so, she and the person who is playing the game (and of course you) learn lots of French. There is also a free Language Guide, Cultural Guide download. The Language Guide has plenty of exercises. The audio lessons are also available in mp3 format for your iPod.
- 4. French Steps
BBC has one of the best free language learning courses. French Steps is for absolute beginners. It is a 12 week course. There is a Fast Track available too. Then there is email encouragement - absolutely essential for many of us who need that extra bit of prodding. There is a User Guide and a Vocabulary List also.
- 5. Ma France
Those who do not know a word of French, "Ma" means 'my', the feminine form of the adjective. Any ways, this 24-unit interactive video course has all the components of a proper French course. Transcripts are available for all the video and the comprehension exercises is brilliant. You can also keep a track of your progress.Grammar and Vocabulary notes are included. An excellent offering from the BBC.
- 6. L'affaire du coffret
If BBC can offer French courses, do you think Radio France International can be far behind. This course is a 60-unit course is a detective story. As you get sucked into the mystery you learn French just like Lucas, the British journalist. Podcast is available for download. There are scripts, exercises and quizzes too.
- 7. Comment vont les affaires?
Another from Radio France International stable. This time the focus is on Business French. It is a 20-lesson course and suitable for beginners. It is the story of Daniel, an American on a training course at a French company Paragem. Transcripts and detailed explanation of the language is available.
STOP PRESS
Walk, Talk and Learn French has a successor. It is called On Location French. It is too early to say how it will shape up since it is only one episode old.
I cannot recommend Coffee Break French enough. It is just what the doctor ordered for beginners and intermediate learners. It is hard to imagine high-quality free lessons explaining in great detail the grammar of "y", "en", "qui", "que", past imperfect, perfect, etc. But these are later down the line. The first 40 podcasts are very much for the beginners.

Some Books for Self-Study
If you are planning a quick visit to France shortly ...
... and you are planning to buy a phrase book, don't. 15-Minute French (see above) is what you should buy. I enjoy referring to it very often. Hence, I strongly recommend it to you. Besides, it is the one of the most cleverly designed book that I have come across.
