Just One Style is Not Enough in Martial Arts

Many individuals have the ideal of self-defense being some person with the knowledge of a number of martial arts styles who utilizes all the write kicks and jabs at all the right times, sending the attacker to the ground and defeating him in hero style. Where has this ideal come from? The answer is simple: Television. That's right, years and years of the media creating these figures in our minds-Chick Norris and Bruce Lee to name two. These two individuals deserve the respect for their talent and style. They are definitely the exception to the rule. Their mastery of several martial arts styles was far superior to anyone else's. The truth of the matter is that it takes more than just one style to learn self-defense.

Here are some common martial arts styles and a summation of each one:

Alkido

Aikido-this is of the Japanese styles of martial arts. Derived from the two styles of Jujitsu and Kenjutsu, Aikido is considered to be a pure physical art form. It would be very difficult to learn self-defense from this style, as it is more of a practice in focus. It combines spirituality with exercise.

Judo

Judo-another one of the martial arts styles of the Japanese, Judo has been around since around the 1800's. Judo consists of two different focuses: On the ground and standing up. Mainly used as a sparring technique, Judo can be very useful in staying in shape. As a means of self-defense, it cannot successfully be used as it stands alone.

Karate

Karate-belonging to the Japanese, Karate is one of the most well known martial arts styles of any other. Karate is widely recognized as a sport and a form of art (of self-defense). The key words are "sport" and "art." There are many different practices of this technique, but one important aspect is that one cannot rely upon it for self-defense by itself.

Kung Fu

Kung Fu-Derived from the Chinese, this is one of many martial arts styles that have gained notoriety for its ancient wisdom. It was used in its original form as a war tactic by many ancient generals. Unfortunately, the old style of practice may not even exist, as today's practice is mainly for show.

Everyone has the Right to Defend Him/Her Self

are a teenager, a housewife or a doctor; the bottom line is that everyone has the right to defend his/her self. One of the largest misnomers about self-defense is that the foundation lies within the fighting. It is true that fighting may not be avoided, but the true basis of self-defense is awareness. When you learn self-defense from Captain Chris, this is the most important lesson. Knowing your surroundings, the people around you and what is going on are just a few examples of awareness. Even if you are at home watching television and feeling "secure," it is important to be aware. It is this kind of false comfort that lulls a person into becoming a victim.
