Learn Guitar Online - should you do it?

Ranked #34,243 in Music, #1,305,107 overall

Yes, but make sure you know what you're in for!

So you have that desire to learn guitar, and for one reason or another, it persists. Believe it or not, you are only probably half way there to starting the job. There are numerous reasons why so many people just put their guitars down and end up leaving them gathering dust in a cupboard!

As well as actually really wanting to learn guitar, you'll also need to have some good friends who already play that are prepared to teach you...or... lots of money to pay for lessons. Luckily there are alternatives, and this is where the web comes in.

Predominantly, if you have private lessons they are going to be fairly expensive. Often there is travelling to your teacher (sometimes they come to you), but you always end up shelling out a large helping of cash, and this for maybe only an hour's one to one tuition. In addition, you are then faced with having to practice the lesson, on your own without guidance, until you see your teacher again.

This is where potentially things can go quite badly wrong. Most people will not make videos of their lessons and do not hyave photographic memories, so you almost certainly will make mistakes in how you do your follow up practice. It is a fact that when you learn something albeit badly, it is infinitely more difficult to undo what you have learned and redo it correcty.

I cannot argue against a private guitar teacher for interactive tuition and the chance to ask questions, but the fact is, once they are not watching you.....you're on your own.

The internet is a completely different story and I believe it is the best option for interactive learning. Lessons are provided that can be replayed at your own pace whenever you want. They show you how you actually play specific notes, chords or songs. They teach you specific strum patterns, various tuning techniques, and for electric guitar players, setup on amps and effects. Often, many of the better sites show you fancy tricks, and teach you how to read guitar tablature also.

Once you decide to learn guitar online, it nearly always will involve a single one off payment that is often no more than the cost of a single lesson! What's more, nearly all the online guitar teaching sites will offer refunds if you are not completely happy.

If I was starting my guitar learning adventure out today, this is definitely something that I would give seriousl thought about. Once you have masterd the basics of playing the guitar, drilled correctly, there are hundreds of sites on the internet that show you how to play virtually any song you wish.

The big question for me is which sites offer me the best value for money fo guitar teaching?
