Whenever someone mentions cookies of any kind, my mouth immediately begins to water. Who doesn't love homemade cookie recipes? One of my favorites of all time is the famous chocolate chip. There are hundreds of different recipes for these delicious morsels. Which ones are the best? Well, I've tested and baked hundreds of cookie recipes over the years and will continue to do so to find out. It's a tough job, I know. But someone has to do it.
Copycat Recipes
The world fell in love with Mrs. Fields famous chocolate chip cookie recipes. So much so, that people began making copycat recipe versions of the timeless classic. Everyone wants to know what makes secret recipes so special. What ingredient are they using that makes a recipe unique? Well, I have tried different versions and in my opinion, the following recipe is pretty darn close to the original and very tasty! The unique ingredient is the blended oats. They give the cookie a rich and creamy texture. I think you'll love it!
Mrs. Fields Chocolate Chip Cookies (Copycat Version)
2 c. softened butter
2 c. granulated sugar
2 c. brown sugar
4 large eggs
2 tsp. vanilla
4 c. flour
5 c. oats (blended into powder)
1 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
8 oz. Hershey's chocolate bar (grated)
3 c. semisweet chocolate chips
2 c. chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream together butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Sift together flour, blended oats, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Add to mixture and mix well. Add Hershey bar, chocolate chips and pecans. Mix until just combined. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 min. Makes about 9-10 dozen cookies.
When it comes to simple cookie recipes, it doesn't get much easier than this one for Chips Ahoy! cookies. This recipe uses an 'egg white', rather than the whole egg, and you add water to it. I think that's the secret to the crispiness. Enjoy!
Chips Ahoy! Cookies
4 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. vegetable shortening (Crisco)
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 large egg white
2-4 tbsp. warm water
12 oz. mini semisweet chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Combine the flour and baking soda, set aside. Using an electric mixer, cream the shortening and the two sugars. Add the vanilla, salt and egg white, mix well. Add the flour mixture 1/2 cup at a time adding a tablespoon of warm water as necessary to mix the flour (don't exceed 4 tablespoons of water), this will make a firm dough. Mix in chocolate chips (you may have to do this by hand if the dough is too firm). Roll into 2-inch balls and press down flat onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 12-15 min. Makes about 3-4 dozen cookies.
