How To Get More Website Traffic

So you have a few articles online, and now need to know how to get more website traffic. There are various ways of getting targeted visitors to your site, in fact a lot more than what most people realise. Despite this however, the main focus of many internet marketers will be on how to get more website traffic from search engines alone.

The first thing that you must know is that in the big scheme of things, search engine traffic doesn't matter nearly as much as you may have been led to believe. Did you know that many popular sites get as little as 2-5% of their traffic from search engines? Yet they still get plenty of targeted (paying) customers to their websites.

When learning how to get more website traffic, your time may be better spent invested in some of the lesser known, but highly effective methods of bringing visitors to your site. If you are having trouble with search engine optimisation, then there are plenty of other options!

Despite this, it is still normal to spend at least some time worried about exactly where you are ranking in the search engine results. If you can make it to the first 1-3 pages in Google then it will make a difference to your business, so learning how to get website traffic through search engines is not a bad place to start.

At the very least it is worth making a determined attempt to get traffic in this way.

It is also important to learn these methods and techniques, so that you have a well-rounded education in internet marketing. Many people will ask for your advice on this, so it helps to know what you are talking about!

Keep the above figures in mind though, so that you don't waste too much time and effort in worrying about what search engines like Google are doing. If search engine optimisation is not working out for you, or is a constant struggle, then it is time to move on to another solution.

The good news is that once you start exploring how to get more website traffic, you will find that the options are almost endless. Many of the lesser known methods will also provide you with a much better return for your time and your money. In fact most of them are FREE, and far less painful than search engine optimisation!

But anyway, first things first :)

How to get more website traffic from search engines:

The two most important things that you must be doing if you are looking for search engine traffic, is writing quality articles and getting decent backlinks. It is also a good idea to optimise your content for search engines, but don't spend too much time on this. Find a reasonable (long-tail) keyword and put it in your title, permalink, first and last paragraphs of your article, and then leave it at that.

So back to my two main points:

1) Quality - Most people already know that quality is important, but let me be clear:

Google's changes are aimed at (eventually) having a search engine that will reliably locate quality articles. It makes sense that you can therefore stay one step ahead of any changes that they could possibly come up with, by simply writing quality content!

Sounds obvious, and you may have heard it all before, but in practise a lot of internet marketers try to do it the other way around. They think it is easier just to write any old thing and slap it online.

It does seem easier and quicker to do it this way, but it can also be a long hard road to travel. Google will catch up with you eventually, and it will take a lot of (wasted) effort trying to stay ahead of them each time they do.

Instead of approaching it in this way, do it once, do it properly, and you will be rewarded for years to come. That way it will take very little effort to maintain your sites regardless of what Google does.

2) Backlinks - These are links to your website from other sites and pages on the net.

To simplify what this means to a search engine, think of each link to your content as a 'vote' of approval for your stuff. The more reputable the source of the vote, the more highly rated your site will be in Google's eyes.

Getting too many votes from sites with poor reputations could also count against you. This is why it is important that you place your articles with links to your main site on reputable websites only.

It is also a good reason to steer clear of completely automated submission software, since you can't always be sure where or how it is 'spinning' and submitting your content. It is often said that one quality link can be worth hundreds of low quality links, so it is worth the extra time that it takes to find and submit your content to high quality article sites.

A really quick and easy way to find these is to notice which article sites are constantly coming up in your search results e.g. Squidoo, Ehow, etc. Start by submitting articles to these sites, and include backlinks to your own website.

So, to summarise how to get more website traffic from search engines:

1. Optimise you content as best you can, but don't waste too much time on this.

2. Write and post quality articles on high traffic sites.

3. Include links to your website in each article, and use your website keywords in your link. Make sure you read and follow the guidelines on each site that you are using for these backlinks. Most article sites will be very specific about how many links you can have in your article, and where to place them.

4. Diversify your linking efforts. Include links to your website from various sources, not just all from one place or from article sites alone.

5. Search for more traffic solutions, and apply what you discover. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket - search engines aren't the only way to get traffic. They can sometimes even be the worst possible source of traffic to rely on!
