One of the problems with the virus that causes cold sores is that once you have it in your system, it's with you for life. What are Cold Sores?

Cold sores are small sores, usually appearing around the mouth, lips or nose that start as blisters that then burst and scab over, taking 7-10 days to heal.

The virus that causes them is very contagious - herpes simplex virus I (HSV-1) - and infects around 70-80 per cent of the population. Because it is so contagious non-sufferers should be careful about becoming infected by someone with a cold sore as well as sufferers being careful about passing on cold sores.

Most of the time the virus lies dormant in the nerve cells, where it stays until reactivated. This varies from person to person, but common causes are stress, a cold or flu, lack of sleep, exposure to sunlight or menstruation.

Many people's first idea of a cold sore about to appear is a tingling sensation in the affected area. Soon after appear small fluid-filled blisters, which blisters may merge to form a larger sore.

As the virus is so contagious suffers need to make sure not only about infecting other people but also about spreading the infection to other areas of the body - if you suffer from cold sores make sure you wash your hands frequently when you have the sores and avoid touching them.

Cold sore treatments

To avoid getting cold sores in the first place you need to avoid picking up the virus, which is commonly passed on by kissing. You only need to be
wary while a sufferer has the sores - when the sufferer doesn't have sores the virus can't be passed on to you.

While there is no cure for cold sores, treatments concentrate on avoiding getting cold sores, insuring rapid healing and reducing pain.

Cold sore medication

While cold sores can't be cured completely there is at least anti-viral medication available that will help combat the virus and ensure that cold sores are knocked on the head as soon as possbile and heal within a few days.

The medication, which contains either penciclovir or acyclovir, is applied when the sufferer first experiences the tingling sensation and it suppresses the virus's ability to replicate. When used correctly these treatments can provide a great deal of relief.

There are many home remedies for cold sores that may provide you relief for you. These include avoiding the situations that cause reoccurrence, such as sunlight, stress or lack of sleep and taking L-Lysine supplements.

Another common remedy is to apply ice to the affected area as soon as the tingling sensation appears, which many people find prevents the cold sore from appearing.

Other advice includes covering a cold sore with Vaseline to help stop secondary bacterial infections.

Also, you should take a pain killer or use a local anesthetic when the sore is painful and avoid acidic foods and salt and a topical vitamin E cream to help heal the sores and prevent scarring.
