It Is Possible to Learn How to Speak Spanish Fast

Lot's of people want to learn how to speak Spanish fast - but just how fast is it possible to learn a foreign language?

You see products that claim to teach you to speak in weeks or even days.  I've been living in Peru for well over 5 years, and still can't say that i'm completely proficient - although I WILL say that I'm fluent!   There are are still a lot of words that I don't know, and although I've made a lot of progress, my verb conjugations still aren't perfect - but I can read newspapers, watch movies, listen to music, even argue with the electric company over the bill.  That to me, is fluent.  I may not use the right word every time, but I can make myself understood.  And I can understand when people talk to me.  Being able to COMMUNICATE - that's the key.

But no matter how well you learn languages, I have to say that I agree with the school of though that says the best way is through immersion. Living in a country that speaks the language is by far the best way to truly learn a language. But that's a dream that not many people can reach. So, other than flying off to live in a foreign country, what else can you do to learn how to speak Spanish fast? Well, you can read books, listen to tapes, and use interactive software. And you can immerse yourself in the language without leaving the country -

1) Listen to music in Spanish. I had great success in learning lots of vocabulary and pronunciation by listening to Spanish language music. Look the lyrics up on the internet, and read along as they sing. Write down words you don't understand, and look them up in the dictionary.

2) Watch the Spanish language TV networks. Spend 15-30 minutes every day watching and listening to television in Spanish. See if you can catch words you recognize, and if an unknown word is used frequently, write it down and look it up later. Television is great for helping your listening skills.

3) Enable the Spanish language track on your favorite movies. As I've mentioned on other pages, watching a familiar movie in Spanish with the English subtitles is a GREAT way to learn how to speak Spanish fast. Listen to a phrase and read what it says - repeat the line out loud then rewind and do it again! This for me, outside of living in a foreign country is the best way of picking up conversational skills. Listening, speaking, and learning the vocabulary, all at once.
