Beginners Piano

The idea of learning how to play the piano may seem a little scary to you when you are just starting out. You must have watched someone play the piano and wondered how on earth they manage to do that with so many keys and combinations of fingers to remember. For someone who has never played the piano or keyboards before rest assured that it isn't necessarily as complicated as it might seem. If you are taught well with a good teacher or a well thought out course then the learning process doesn't have to be tricky at all.

To learn the piano can be well within your capabilities, here are a few pointers to help you along;

Give yourself Time
It can be fairly simple at first to learn some easy techniques and be playing simple music right from the beginning. The difficulty comes when you try to advance from there. You have to give yourself time so that your brain can teach your fingers what they need to do, this is like developing a muscle. The only way to do this is by way of practice, over and over again. You will soon find that after having practiced for some time your fingers will start to naturally fall onto the keys and change when you want them to making your playing seem a little smoother and more confident.

Play regularly
You should play every single day when you are learning so that you can keep training your brain until it really absorbs the actions and motions of the fingers on the keyboard. If you take a day off from your practice routine this can set your progress back substantially. Once you have embarked upon your piano playing journey, even if you don't feel like practicing one day then you should try and make yourself do it even if it is only for a short while. If you take time off playing then you will definitely notice the difference when you return and it will prolong that initial steep part of the learning curve.

Split your hands up
Playing with the hands separately is always a good practice technique. First play the right hand, a few through the piece. After having repeated this a several times you might discover it has become a little easier and smoother. After this you should now try the left hand on its own. Once again practice this left hand part until it becomes easier. Then once you are more confident playing with both your hands separate you can try putting them together. You might find that this is an extremely effective way to progress rapidly and to learn pieces faster. Pieces you already know can also benefit from being played with separate hands occasionally.

Get some ear training
Many piano players have 'good ears' which is something that you will develop little by little as you advance. Without a good ear you will not be able to hear if the notes you are playing are correct or not. A good ear can be developed and you don't necessarily have to be born with it. You can often find little software utilities that can be used for ear training, there are some home study courses that include them as part of the course.

Have fun
The best advice I can give is to enjoy yourself whilst playing (it isn't called 'playing' for nothing). The having fun part can be easily forgotten when things start to go wrong but try and keep things in perspective and you will advance a lot more rapidly. If there are days that you don't feel like practicing then just sit at the piano anyway and maybe play some scales or some other pieces that you are not currently practicing just to keep your hand in. Enjoy yourself whilst practicing and the whole process will become easier. Though not always possible you should try and choose the pieces that you play and practice making sure that you are going to be playing music that you like and can enjoy.

You will see that piano learning can be fun if you follow some of the advice offered here. In fact it can be an exciting and enjoyable experience as you learn how to play the piano knowing that it is possible and can be enjoyable.
