Learn Piano: It's Never Too Late

Piano Lessons: Do I Have To?

Awwww Mom, do I HAVE to take piano lessons?

Sound familiar?

I remember in 7th grade when my mom demanded that I learn to play the piano.

I was reluctant. After all, as a 7th grader, I thought I had more important things to do, like hang out with my friends.

My mother persisted and I became the newest piano student of Felice Hefley.

Piano Lessons: It's Never Too Early or Too Late

Ms. Hefley taught the Austrian piano method. She explained that my days of counting "1,2,3" were over.

I would now count like this: "1 and 2 and 3."

You do the math. Anyway, counting and practicing became my new after-school activity.

Not my favorite thing. I wasn't that great at it. My friends didn't help either. The piano in my home was located right next to a window. I could see out. I saw my friends on bicycles riding past my window looking in at me - a prisoner with my hands stuck in piano-playing position for a whole hour.

It seemed like forever. Any time I stopped practicing for a minute, like to scratch my nose or something, my mom would call out from another room "keep playing!" I laugh about it now, but I appreciate my mom thinking I had some talent potential.

I took piano lessons for a couple of years. Those years included some painful piano recitals during which, fortunately, no one threw any tomatoes.

Playing the Piano is a Gift

Piano 20Fast forward to Today.

Why, oh why, did I not appreciate those lessons more? If I had a child of my own today, I would be the parent encouraging my little Johnny or Sally to learn piano because they'll appreciate having that talent later in life.

I can still pick out a few songs here and there, but not as easily as I used to.

Now, my piano sits quietly with the other furniture in my study. The piano bench currently holds a bunch of office binders and notebooks. Sad.

It's a new day. I'm interested in re-learning piano, getting my piano tuned, and pulling out all my Learn Piano books and attempt to tickle the ivories once again.

New Orleans Jazz Piano and the Blues

I'm a huge fan of New Orleans blues music.

I became a fan during my college years. I spent many an evening strolling down Bourbon street, listening to the various jazz musicians, and falling in love with the rich musical heritage that New Orleans has to offer. And, as any New Orleans resident can testify, who can forget the nightclub, Tippitina's.

Great music and great memories. Hope you enjoy this video. A little Dr. John Music can send me back down memory lane tout de suite!

There are Many Ways to Learn Piano

How I would love to play like that.

While many accomplished pianists have taken lessons, there are just as many who learn to play piano by ear. Not me, mind you, but many great musicians. That kind of natural talent is a gift.

If you or, if you want your child to learn to play the piano, I highly encourage it. You and they will be so blessed later in life. You'll amaze your friends and, who knows? You may even be able to turn it into a career! Just look on youtube. You can see kids as young as six years old playing the piano!

The Care and Feeding of Your Piano

Your piano will sound a lot better if you take care of it. That means keeping the bench clear of books, binders, folders or knick-knacks.

All that should be sitting on that bench is your hind-end when you sit down to play something. Oh, and don't let your family cat choose it as a daybed.

As with any fine instrument, keep your piano free from dust. You can wipe it down, but make sure the cloth you use is non-abrasive. It's much better to use a light feather duster to keep the keys clean and to dust off the fine wood.

Pianos should be tuned about every six months. Call a professional to do this for you. It takes a highly skilled technician to be able to tune your piano so it can sound its best.

Like you, I was quick to give up as a child and have often regretted it. I have found it tough as an adult to pick up where I left off. Good luck in your own piano learning. If you are determined enough, you'll succeed!

I was not able to take piano, so I took a piano course in college. I wish I had stayed with it. Blessings!

I loved this article! When my son was old enough, we signed him up for lessons and although he hates to practice, we know that having music in your life is so rewarding. Like the author of this piece, he will be glad he was given this invaluable opportunity to learn the piano.
