Tamil - Language of the Millions
Tamil is a classical language spoken by more than 77 million people. Tamil is one of the widely spoken languages in the world. It is an official language of state of Tamil Nadu in India and one of the official languages of Sri Lanka and Singapore and has constitutional recognition in South Africa, Mauritius and Malaysia. In Malaysia, in government schools, primary education is also available fully in Tamil. Large Tamil-speaking communities also reside in various parts of the world. There are currently large Tamil-speaking populations descended from colonial-era immigrants in Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius and South Africa. Lots of people in Guyana, Fiji, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago have Tamil origins, but only a small number of populations speak Tamil there. Groups of more recent migrants from India and Sri Lanka (due to civil war) exist in Australia, Canada, USA , several countries in Middle East and most of the western European countries. The name "TAMIL" point out not only the language, but also culture, civilization, tradition, music & etc., which are initiated from Tamil people and Tamil soil.

About Tamil
Tamil is one of the oldest languages of the world with a 2500 year history. It is one of the few living classical languages in the world and has a continuous literary tradition of over two millennia. The high level of diglossia exhibited by Tamil and the reputation accorded to classical Tamil have resulted in much of the vocabulary and forms of classical Tamil being conserved in modern Tamil literacy, such that the higher registers of literary Tamil lean towards the classical language.
Tamil developed and prospered in India as an independent language with precious literature. More than 55% of the Epigraphical-inscriptions, about 55,000, found by the ASI in India are in Tamil language. The early inscriptions in Tamil Nadu used Tamil exclusively. Literary works in India were conserved either in palm leaf manuscripts (repeated copying and recopying) or by oral transmission. The earliest extant text in Tamil is the Tholkappiyam, a work on poetics and grammar which illustrate the language of the classical period. The oldest portions of this book may date back around 200 BCE (Hart, 1975). Epigraphic evidence of Tamil begins with rock inscriptions from the 2nd century BC.

More About Tamil

The Sangam (100 BC to 300 AD) literature contains about 50,000 lines of poetry included in 2381 poems attributed to 470 poets including many women. Many of the poems of Sangam age were also set to music. During the Sangam period, notable works like Thirukkural, and epic poems like Silappatikaram, Manimekalai, S%u012Bvakacint%u0101mani were composed. The Bhakthi age is known for the great outpouring of devotional songs set to 'Pan' music. Of those 9,295 Tevaram(9295) songs on Saivism and 4,000 songs on Vaishnavism are significant. The early mediaeval Period gave rise to one of the best known revision of the Ramayana in Tamil, known as 'Kamba Ramayanam' and a story of 63 'Nayanmars' known as Periyapuranam.
Modern Tamil vocabulary still preserves most of the words from classical Tamil. Due to this and because of the importance on learning classical works like Tirukkural, classical Tamil is understandable in various degrees to most native speakers of today. On the other hand, a number of Prakrit and Sanskrit loan words have been bespoke and used commonly in modern Tamil. However, unlike some other Dravidian languages, these words are limited mainly to spiritual terminology and abstract nouns.

- Really useful Lens for those of us looking to learn Tamil. I hope more research is done on Tamil and other Dravidian languages so we know about the exact origins of this language family. I am sure this will remove much controversy over the Aryan Invasion Theory.
I don't believe in the AIT, however Indo-European languages are no doubt related. Linguistics is certainly an interesting field of study.
