This is the book that I bought myself to learn how to crochet. The how to instructions are clear, and are given for both left and right handed crafters. My only issue with learning to crochet is that my tension is too tight. This book not only has great how to instructions, but there are many different knit stitches that would make this an invaluable reference for any crocheter in the future.

I don't think that I could say it too much better than the long title to this book! The photo guides in this book are are stunning, and will clearly help you make your first stitches.

Kids Learn to Crochet

As with learn to knit books, there are books that are more focused to children than adults. These would make a good option when you are hoping to aid a younger novice crocheter.
