So you want to learn how to fly a RC plane, but don't have any idea how to. Does this sound like you?
If so this is your lucky day! This single page will teach you just how to fly a RC plane, the quick, easy and cheapest way.
I was once in your posistion and had to figure it out on my own, but now I know the simplest, and cheapest, way to get into this fantastic hobby.
Although it may seem a daunting prospect, learning how to fly a RC plane for the first time, it really isn't! There are loads of cheap, durable RC planes made for the beginner like you. Flying planes is an interesting, fun and lifelong hobby.
This page will explain everything you need to know about RC planes, including: what to do before you buy a plane, what's the best plane to start with, what planes to advance to and an expanding glossary full of RC words.
How Do I Begin?
RC Simulators Of Course
Before you even buy a radio controlled plane you should invest in a RC simulator.
Simulators allow you to practice on your computer before flying for real.
This has many benefits...
*Crashing won't cost you money!
*You learn the controls of the transmitter
*You can learn how to fly from a different orientation (eg. When flying towards yourself the controls become reversed)
Using RC simulators is simple. Simply install the software provided and plug in the transmitter (included) into a spare USB port and get flying!
Simulators can cost from as low as $20
Read the descriptions below to find a suitable RC simulator
After Mastering The Sim
Now It's Time To Fly For Real...
The next step after the simulator is flying for real. This means that you need to purchase you first RC plane.
There are 3 excellent planes for beginners, the WildHawk, SuperCub and EasyStar.
Each has their own pros and cons, so read the descriptions below, but all of them are fantastic planes for beginners.
These planes have brushed motors, which are not as powerful as brushless motors, making the aircraft easier to handle for beginners.

Important Information
Before Flying Your Plane
After you've bourght one of the above beginner planes it's important that you remember these important points.
*Make sure your batteries are fully charged
*Check that the center of gravity is correct
*Choose a flying area away from houses, people, trees etc
*Fly with an experienced pilot but don't fly with friends/family, they will distract you
*Launch the plane into the wind, as it creates more lift
*Try to keep the plane close to you, don't let it get out of view
*Fly at a reasonable speed
*Land into the wind
Moving On To More Advanced Planes
Beginner aircraft, like the ones above, have 3 channels, or functions. They are throttle, rudder and elevator. On the other hand more advanced aircraft have 4 channels, adding ailerons, which control the roll of the plane. The addition of this extra channel means that the full transmitter is being used. Making it slightly more difficult, since there' more to control.
Before you buy a more advanced plane practice on your simulator
The recommended planes listed below all have 4 channels and brushless motors, which means they are more powerful, efficient and quiet than brushed motors
Excellent Backyard flyer
4 channel ultra-micro RC plane
This is the perfect next step up from your beginner plane. It's small enough to fly in your back-yard and looks great too!

Glossary
Reciever (Rx) - This is located inside of your aircraft. The receiver picks up your inputs from the transmitter, allowing you to control the aircraft's movements.
ESC - The ESC, electroninc speed controller, links and supplies power to the reciever, which gives power to the servos, and motor.
Brushed Motor Less powerful, efficient and louder than brushless motors, but work nice in beginner planes.
Brushless Motor More powerful, efficient and quieter than standard brushed motors. Best for pilots who have had experience flying.

- Nice page. Do you think this would be an ok hobby for a 12 year old? I am concerned that it might be too challenging/frustrating ... not to mention that some of these toys are pricey. TY.

- I think it's a great hobby for a 12 year old. I started flying RC planes at a similar age. Just let them get lots of experience on the simulator first, before buying a plane. When buying a plane pay the extra money for a decent one (like the ones i mentioned) and avoid the smaller, cheaper ones, as these are frustrating.
Crashing doesn't matter as the plane's are easily repaired with a bit of glue. Part of the fun is repairing/modifying the plane!
Have fun!

- Nice information for the rc aviation beginner. I found, when I started, that the simulator was a funny and necessary way to learn flyin RC planes if you don't have the luxury of a teacher.
