Review of the Sojing Silent Guitar

I am an amateur, not particularly good, guitarist. However, I love playing for myself and kids, when they can bear to listen, and occasionally when camping or at parties.

However, the most chance I get to practice is pretty late in the evening when my kids have gone to bed. So I find myself conscious of not being too loud which hampers my practice.

Now recently I found a thing called a silent guitar on ebay and thought I would give it a try. I paid about AU$80 for it plus some shipping costs.

First thing to say is that I am no guitar expert and this is certainly no Gibson or Fender, but for the cost I think this thing is fantastic. Probably the best value purchase I have made in 10 years!

I just thought that I should add that while this review is specifically of the Sojing silent guitar, I have realised that it's just as much a comment on any silent guitar and how useful I have found having one. If you find something similar in your budget range and you have the same issues that I do, then I reckon it could be worth a go!

What you get

type=textWhen it first arrived the packaging was very basic and there were no instructions. I was a little concerned but my worries were soon far behind me. It comes with a soft case, a set of headphones, a jack lead for playing through an amplifier, a 9volt battery and an allen key (I haven't worked out what it's for yet!). And I think it looks really pretty cool too! My youngest son calls it the "devil guitar".

Quality and how it plays?

type=textNow I saw a review by someone on a guitar-centric website that said " it is horrible to play and the action was rubbish and couldn't be adjusted". I have to disagree entirely. The Sojing silent guitar is very similar to play to my ordinary steel string acoustic guitar. The action on the one I received is maybe a little bit high but is generally fine. And if I wanted to change it I am 99.9999% certain that I could remove the bridge and sand it down if I wanted to lower the action.

How does it sound?

type=textIn terms of sound? Well it isn't called the Sojing Silent Guitar for nothing!! The sound through the headphones is absolutely fine for practicing. There are 2 control knobs which aren't labelled but the one nearest the socket for the headphones is for volume and the other is for tone. The adjustments are a little bit clumsy but, having never had an electric guitar before I have had great fun playing to myself through the headphones and fiddling with the control knobs to make different sounds. the headphones also have a volume control.

You can also use it without the headphones, which I probably do at least 50% of the time I'm practicing. I can hear what I'm playing but because there is no sound box it is really quiet and I can hammer away my strumming without worrying about waking the kids up! And by the way, the headphones have 2 plugs - one green and one pink. You plug the green one into the guitar and I think the pink one is for a microphone, although I'm not sure why if you're trying to practice quietly!

Overall

I think this is a great buy for the money. However, professional or serious musicians would probably disagree. But if you're a learner or improving guitarist on a budget and live in a flat or have children and need to practice quietly, or if you're a bit shy or self-conscious about other people hearing you practice - this Sojing Silent Guitar is really worth considering.
