Why DVD Guitar Lessons?

So you want to learn to play guitar, and for some reason DVD's have caught your eye. In my opinion, DVD guitar lessons are the best method for learning guitar, but more on that in a minute...

Learning to Play the "Normal" Way

...what I did before I found DVD guitar lessons:

Here's my guitar story:

I have been playing guitar for about 9 years now, and I feel like I've gotten a lot better in the last couple years. I started out on a Delta acoustic guitar I got for $10 from a garage sale, and slowly moved up to a Gretsch electric from my Dad. I played in a band for about 4 years, and loved playing rock/punk garage band stuff. (Good times...)

After a few years, I decided to dip into the acoustic realm, and saved up for a Takamine Acoustic/Electric, and I absolutely love it! Ever since, I have been more into acoustic and singer/songwriter music, but I still love Rock deep down inside. ;)

Once I decided to get more into guitar as a hobby, I started taking private lessons.

Bad move...

Here's why:

I was paying $10 per 1/2-hour lesson just to be shown things that I didn't understand at the time, then go back and learn it on my own before the next lesson!

"So, why am I dumping $30/week on lessons if I'm learning them myself?"

Most guitar instructors will force you into teaching yourself between the lessons, with their initial guidance & tips to help you out. (This was how all 3 of my guitar teachers did things, and many guitarists I know felt the same way about their instructors, too...)

This isn't a bad way to teach, which is why it's so common. However, there is a MUCH better way for you to learn guitar: DVD lessons!

Let me explain...

Why DVD Guitar Lessons Rock!

Alright, here's where things get exciting:

Having a private instructor has its advantages, right? Sure: You get to stay organized, have someone constantly pushing you to improve (we're all lazy, right?), and you have someone that's experienced to guide you through the hard parts of learning.

But, as I mentioned above, you'll quickly find yourself going home confused (because it's almost impossible for most guitarists to pick something up after 1-2 times), and learning everything on your own!

Let me explain why DVD lessons are the BEST way to learn guitar:

1) You still get the personal, 1-on-1 attention & examples like with a private instructor...BUT, you get to rewind and watch each exercise as many times as you need, and you can play along the whole time!

2) There is no time limit...or time of day you have to work around! You can play whenever you want, for as long as you want!

3) You can play at home, meaning you don't have to haul your gear around town just to get 30 minutes of practice in.

4) You don't have to be embarrassed by your skill level, because you can play in your room! (Then you'll show people how amazing you are after you've practiced! They'll never even know you started out like everyone else...Just tell them: "Yeah, I'm pretty much a guitar prodigy!") =)

5) You can use the exercises & skills you get from them to play any kind of music you like! (One thing I hated about having a tutor was that they had a bias toward a certain kind of music, and no matter how hard they tried not to, they would always pick songs that they liked instead of music I wanted to learn.)

So if you agree that learning guitar on DVD is a good idea, let me talk about one last factor to help you make the best decision for you...

One last reason DVD guitar lessons are awesome...

Hint: Want to save almost $1,400 every year?!

I don't care if you're Bill Gates, cost is always a factor when buying something, right?

Well, let me break the cost of lessons down for you:

I was paying $10/lesson (30-minutes), 3x each week. Some instructors charge a lot more than this, but let's just go with this to be safe.

So, $10/lesson * 3 lessons/week * 52 weeks/year =
$1,560/year for private lessons!

If your teacher charged $15/lesson, it would cost you $2,340/year!

Now let's compare this to learning guitar with DVD's:

I did a couple hours of research online to find some killer DVD guitar courses, and I found one that really stood out: LearnAndMasterGuitar.com.

I bought this course for $199 (deluxe version that comes with 20 DVD's!), and it was worth every penny. (They also offer a version with 10 DVD's for $149.) The rest of the DVD courses I found were either poorly made or didn't cover enough material.

Which would you rather pay: $199 once or $1,560/year?

So, I quit my private lessons and started learning at my own pace in my room. I honestly feel like 2 months of playing with the DVD's helped more than the lessons I took for over a year!

Here's the sweetest part: I paid $199, but 2 months of lessons would have cost me $30/week * 8 weeks = $240!

It's been more than a year since I bought Learn & Master Guitar, so I've saved over $1,500 on lessons so far!

"What comes with the Learn & Master Guitar DVD course?"

So you're ready to start learning guitar with some awesome DVD's, right?

But...I would imagine you want to make sure that you're getting some real value for your money. Well, after researching for hours (and buying 4 courses myself), I recommend Learn and Master Guitar.

Here's what you'll get with it:
  • 10 DVD's (Deluxe: 20 DVD's): These videos start with the basics like how to hold the pick or tune your guitar, which is perfect for beginners. (Note: I was NOT a beginner when I bought this course, and it still helped me tremendously! Steve included tons of lessons for intermediate-advanced players, too...)

Then, the DVD's move up to basic & advanced chords, help with chord changing (every new guitarists' enemy!), strumming & rhythm, scales, soloing, reading music & tabs, and even how to write your own songs on guitar!

They're really easy to use, and have cool views to help with exercises like this:

  • 5 Jam-Along CD's: These CD's have almost 100 songs for you to play along with and learn different styles of guitar quickly. One of the best ways to learn is to just start playing, but that's tough to do by yourself.

It's fun rocking out with these CD's, and it helped me learn new styles, too! (The songs range from rock, to blues, to jazz, to acoustic...)

  • Learn & Master Guitar Lesson Book: In case you ever want to look something up in a book (or someone's hogging the TV), this book has all of the lessons from the Learn & Master Guitar DVD's, which is cool.

  • Members' Only Support Community: One benefit of having a private instructor is that you can ask them specific questions when you're having trouble. This would be a disadvantage of learning guitar by DVD, but it's not with Learn & Master Guitar!

As a member, you can login and talk with other guitarists (including Steve Krenz, the dude who made the whole course) and ask as many questions as you need to!

DVD Guitar Lessons - Conclusion

Well, I hope that helps you with your decision!

Also, if you're having trouble deciding on an online guitar course, I setup a page like this that reviews all of the guitar courses I bought.

Overall, Learn & Master Guitar is the best investment I've ever made for improving my guitar skills by far, and I think it will help you get better too:
