The Armenian language refers to three different languages: Classical Armenian which is the older form of the language; Modern Western Armenian which developed in Armenian regions now under Turkish control and also the variety of the language spoken in the diaspora; and Modern Eastern Armenian which is the language of the Republic of Armenia.

More than six million people speak Armenian even though the total population of the Republic of Armenia is less than 4 million. Diaspora communities are found in various countries including in Iran , Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, United States, Turkey, France, and Iraq.

Smaller communities are also found in Canada, Cyprus, Greece, India, Israel, Jordan.

The Primary Dialects 

Wester Armenian & Eastern Armenian

The primary standard dialects of Armenian are Eastern Armenian which is used in Armenia and in Azerbaijan and Iran. In contrast Western Armenian is used by Armenians living in Istanbul, Lebanon, Egypt, and in other parts of the diaspora.

Eastern Armenian has been influenced Russian influence and differs orthographically from its Western Armenian counterpart. Phonological differences also exist.
