The English Language

Speaking English - Learn English Online - Learn English with MP3

English is a West Germanic language that developed in England during the Anglo-Saxon era. As a result of the military, economic, scientific, political, and cultural influence of the British Empire during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, and of the United States since the mid 20th century,Ammon, pp. 2245?2247.Schneider, p. 1.Mazrui, p. 21.Howatt, pp. 127?133. it has become the lingua franca in many parts of the world.Crystal, pp. 87?89.Wardhaugh, p. 60. It is used extensively as a second language and as an official language in Commonwealth countries and many international organisations.

Historically, English originated from several dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers beginning in the 5th century. English was further influenced by the Old Norse language of Viking invaders.

At the time of the Norman conquest, Old English developed into Middle English, borrowing heavily from the Norman (Anglo-French) vocabulary and spelling conventions. The etymology of the word "English" is a derivation from the 12th century Old English englisc or Engle, plural form Angles ("of, relating to, or characteristic of England").[http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/English]

Modern English developed with the Great Vowel Shift that began in 15th-century England, and continues to adopt foreign words from a variety of languages, as well as coining new words. A significant number of English words, especially technical words, have been constructed based on roots from Latin and ancient Greek.

British English or American English?

On the two continents different words are used for the same thing:

The 'old' British English can be quite different from the English spoken in the U.S.A.:

Let's take as an example an auto (American English) or a car (British English) and a few of the parts of such a transport means:

British English ----- American English

Bonnet ----- Hood
Windscreen ----- Windshield
Boot ----- Trunk
Reversing lights ----- Back-up lights
Exhaust pipe ----- Tail pipe / Muffler

... like these words, there are many other areas of daily life where a British citizen might have a problem understanding what an American is saying and vice versa. Pimsleur.

Learning English offers a few other challenges, but they can be overcome, just go for it! To use William Shakespeare's quote:

"Cowards die many times before their deaths, The valiant never taste of death but once."
Caesar in Julius Caesar (II, ii, 32-37)

Learn English in England

Learning English in London is one of the best ways to pick up the English language in all it's facettes and accents. From 'the Queen's English' all the way to pure and straight Kockney accents you'll hear everything.

Not to speak of all the foreign accents of the many world citicens living in this melting pot called London:

London () is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. A major settlement for two millennia, its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium. London's core, the ancient City of London, the 'square mile', retains its mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the nineteenth century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis developed around it. Today, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly.

London is a major global city and one of the world's largest financial centres. Central London is home to the headquarters of most of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. London's influence in politics, finance, education, entertainment, media, fashion, the arts and culture in general contributes to its global position. It is a major tourist destination for both domestic and overseas visitors. London hosted the 1908 and 1948 Summer Olympics and will host the 2012 Summer Olympics. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; the historic settlement of Greenwich; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; and the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church.

London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures, and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. In July 2007 it had an official population of 7,556,900 within the boundaries of Greater London, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union. The Greater London Urban Area (the second largest in the EU) has a population of 8,278,251. while the metropolitan area (the largest in the EU) has an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. The London Underground network, administered by Transport for London, is the most extensive underground railway network in the world, London Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers and the airspace is the busiest of any urban centre in the world.International Passenger Traffic, Airports Council International

It's very convenient to listen to the English alphabet with mp3 sound. To study English alphabet, listeing to native speakers is best. As soemtimes these people also only have limited reading skills, it's easiest to use learn english mp3 files. These language audios are great: Learning english mp3 downloads or CD's will allow them to make much faster progress than with English language learning books only.

An other great possibility to learn Egnlish is to learn to speak English at the movies. Make it a habit to go to moives that are shown in the original English language and that have (if possible) undertitles in your language. To be able to hear and see the action at the same time makes learning English more efficient.

Not only does the phrasebook have hundreds of phrases (more than I've been able to go through), but it also says ALL of them out loud in Arabic. This means that you can listen to it and practice it on your own, or if you're desperate you can just point to the screen to whoever you need to understand your point.

My husband and I are serious Spanish students (study several hours per day),and are planning to move to Mexico. We also have several Mexican employees.

The 1450 is ideal for us. It is really meant for Mexico, and South America, not Spain. It tells you when a word is appropriate for a certain country. What I love about it is that nearly all the words I have ever looked up for translation have been available, with very good definitions. Also it corrects spelling errors.

More importantly, with many words that have variable meanings, it gives examples of sentences to show how variable the meaning can be. This has been invaluable for us, since the tendency in learning a language is to try to translate quite literally, which is often inappropriate:
(Example: Caer;
1:to fall, to drop
2:to collapse
3:to hang down
4:caer bien - to be pleasant, to be likable
5:caer mal or caer gordo: to be unpleasant, to be unlikable
6:caerse:to fall down)

The Old English Alphabet

English Spelling - English Words - English Phrases

Old English was first written in runes (futhorc) but shifted to a (minuscule) half-uncial script of the Latin alphabet introduced by Irish Christian missionaries. This was replaced by insular script, a cursive and pointed version of the half-uncial script. This was used until the end of the 12th century when continental carolingian minuscule (also known as caroline) replaced the insular.

In a nutshell, this is how Old english has develiped to today's spoken and written English:

450-1100 Old English (Anglo-Saxon) - The language of Beowulf.

1100-1500 Middle English - The language of Chaucer.

1500-1650 Early Modern English (or Renaissance English) - The language of Shakespeare.

1650-present Modern English (or Present-Day English) - The language as spoken today.

Old English Alphabet - The full story

Old English (Englisc, Ænglisc), also called Anglo-Saxon,The term Anglo-Saxon came to refer to all things of the early English period by the 16th century, including language, culture, and people. While this is still the preferred term for the latter two aspects, the language starting from the 19th century began to be called Old English. This is because the language itself began to be studied in detail, and scholars recognised the continued development of the English language from the Anglo-Saxon period to Middle English and through to the present day. However many authors still use the term Anglo-Saxon to refer to the language. is an early form of the English language that was spoken and written in parts of what are now England and south-eastern Scotland between at least the mid-5th century and the mid-12th century. What survives through writing represents primarily the literary register of Anglo-Saxon. It is a West Germanic language and is closely related to Old Frisian. It also experienced heavy influence from Old Norse, a member of the related North Germanic group of languages.

The History of the English language

English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought to Britain by Germanic invaders from various parts of what is now northwest Germany and the Netherlands. Initially, Old English was a diverse group of dialects, reflecting the varied origins of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of England. One of these dialects, Late West Saxon, eventually came to dominate. The original Old English language was then influenced by two further waves of invasion: the first by speakers of the Scandinavian branch of the Germanic language family, who conquered and colonized parts of Britain in the 8th and 9th centuries; the second by the Normans in the 11th century, who spoke Old Norman and ultimately developed an English variety of this called Anglo-Norman. These two invasions caused English to become "mixed" to some degree.

Cohabitation with the Scandinavians resulted in a significant grammatical simplification and lexical enrichment of the Anglo-Frisian core of English; the later Norman occupation led to the grafting onto that Germanic core of a more elaborate layer of words from the Romance languages (Latin based languages). This Norman influence entered English largely through the courts and government. Thus, English developed into a "borrowing" language of great flexibility, resulting in an enormous and varied vocabulary.

Scottish English

Scottish English refers to the varieties of English spoken in Scotland. It may or may not include Scots depending on the observer.Stuart-Smith J. Scottish English: Phonology in Varieties of English: The British Isles, Kortman & Upton (Eds), Mouton de Gruyter, New York 2008. p.48

The main, formal variety is called Scottish Standard English"The SCOTS Corpus contains documents in Scottish Standard English, documents in different varieties of Scots, and documents which may be described as lying somewhere between Scots and Scottish Standard English.", Scottish Corpus of Texts and Speech"... Scottish Standard English, the standard form of the English language spoken in Scotland", Ordnance Survey or Standard Scottish English.[http://www.scottishcorpus.ac.uk/corpus/search/document.php?documentid=496]Although there is some debate about the usefulness of the word standard here, most academics agree on the use of the abbreviation SSE in order to distinguish the variety from the geographically English Standard English, which is normally abbreviated to SE. However, Scottish English does have some distinctive vocabulary, particularly pertaining to Scottish institutions such as the Church of Scotland, local government and the education and legal systems.

Scottish Standard English is at one end of a bipolar linguistic continuum, with focused broad Scots at the other.Stuart-Smith J. Scottish English: Phonology in Varieties of English: The British Isles, Kortman & Upton (Eds), Mouton de Gruyter, New York 2008. p.47

Scottish English may be influenced to varying degrees by Scots.Macafee C. Scots in Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics, Vol. 11, Elsevier, Oxford, 2005. p.33

Many Scots speakers separate Scots and Scottish English as different registers depending on social circumstances.Aitken A.J. Scottish Speech in Languages of Scotland, Association for Scottish Literary Studies, Occasional Paper 4, Edinburgh:Chambers 1979. p.85 Some speakers code switch clearly from one to the other while others style shift in a less predictable and more fluctuating manner. Generally there is a shift to Scottish English in formal situations or with individuals of a higher social status.Aitken A.J. Canadian English

Canadian English (CanE, en-CAen-CA is the language code for Canadian English , as defined by ISO standards (see ISO 639-1 and ISO 3166-1 alpha-2) and Internet standards (see IETF language tag).) is the variety of English used in Canada. More than 26 million Canadians (85% of the population) have some knowledge of English (2006 census).Population by knowledge of official language, by province and territory (2006 Census) Approximately 17 million speak English as their native language. Outside Quebec, 76% of Canadians speak English natively. Canadian English contains elements of British English in its vocabulary, as well as several distinctive Canadianisms. In many areas, speech is influenced by French, and there are notable local variations. However, Canada has very little dialect diversity compared to the United States. The phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and lexicon for most of Canada are similar to that of the Western and Midland regions of the United States,Labov, p. 222. while the phonological system of western Canadian English is identical to that of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, and the phonetics are similar.Boberg, C: "Geolinguistic Diffusion and the U.S.-Canada Border", "Language Variation and Change", 12(1):15 As such, Canadian English and American English are sometimes grouped together as North American English. Canadian English spelling is largely a blend of British and American conventions.

Irish English

Hiberno-English - also known as Anglo-Irish and Irish English - is English as spoken in Ireland, partly the result of the interaction of the English and Irish languages. English was mainly brought to Ireland during the Plantations of Ireland in the sixteenth century and established itself in Dublin and in the area of Leinster known as the Pale. It was later introduced into Ulster during the Plantation of Ulster through Belfast and the Lagan Valley in the seventeenth century. The linguistic influence of the Irish language is most evident in Gaeltachtaí, areas where Irish is still widely spoken, as well as in areas where, before the complete adoption of English, Irish continued to be spoken for longer than in other areas.

The standard spelling and grammar of Irish-English are largely the same as common British English. However, some unique characteristics exist, especially in the spoken language, owing to the influence of the Irish language on the pronunciation of English.

Despite its unassuming appearance, this dictionary is PACKED!

It has useful pages on spelling, grammar and pronunciation. It also has a section of geographical proper nouns and a section on common irregular verbs.

The most useful feature of this dictionary, however, is its inclusion of phoenetic pronunciation with the Irish entries; something most other Irish/English dictionaries lack.
