What is Hypnosis?

What comes to your mind when you heard the word 'hypnosis'? After hearing that word our mind automatically generate an image; man with goatee that swings a pocket watch back and forth, guiding his subject into a semi-sleep, zombie-like state or being controlled.

Thus the generated image is somewhat similar to a real hypnotism activity. The person under hypnosis addresses the hypnotist as 'master' and follows every commands given.

Hypnosis is a relaxed, focused state of concentration. Hypnosis is a normal state of mind, one which most people go in and out of every day. When you are watching a movie that you are engrossed in, driving down a long monotonous road, listening to music that captures a mood or engrosses you, you are in hypnosis. We experience hypnosis every day and don't even know it. When you are in a guided hypnotic trance session, or driving down the road in trance, you have an observer self, which is an actual part of you that is always aware and watching out for you.

Hypnosis also referred to as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, is a process in which critical thinking faculties of the mind are bypassed and a type of selective thinking and perception is established. It's a trance-like altered state of consciousness involving changes in perception, memory, and the voluntary control of action.

Hypnosis is a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject. Some supposed hypnotic indicators and subjective changes can be achieved without relaxation or a lengthy induction by means of simple suggestion or waking hypnosis, a fact that increases the controversy and misunderstandings around hypnosis and the hypnotic state.

Hypnotism as a tool for health seems to have originated with the Hindus of India who often took their sick to sleep temples to be cured by hypnotic suggestion as also found to be the case in Egypt and Greece.

The first recognizable practitioner of hypnosis was Franz Anton Mesmer, an Austrian physician of the 18th-century. Abbe Faria was the first man who attempted to use the power of suggestion to cure illnesses. He was eventually discredited but his followers continued to hypnotize people with his techniques.

The term hypnosis came from a Scottish physician, James Braid, who used the Greek word for sleep to create the term. James Esdale a Scottish physician in India used hypnosis as a surgical anesthetic. Modern research however indicates that in these cases, the ability of each individual patient to mentally reduce pain or focus on the imagination as a tool for pain relief is how the process actually occurs, and that the concept of 'hypnosis' is misleading.

There is as such a great deal of controversy about whether there is any such thing as hypnosis. Many of the effects produced by 'hypnosis' have several alternate theories to describe their occurrence. 2. One is unconscious and unaware in hypnosis - often said that hypnosis is caused by the hypnotist's power. Hypnotists only offer suggestions which the subject or client may choose to respond to or not to respond to and have no powers.


3. Weak-mindedness - there is nothing to do if a person have a low intelligence to hypnotize-ability. Research studies suggest neither intelligence, sex, nor personality traits affect responsiveness to hypnosis and that hypnotize-ability may in fact be hereditary or genetic in nature.


4. Overactive imagination - Another misconception in is that hypnosis is often the product of vivid imaginations and that hypnotic phenomena is merely imagined in the mind. However, research indicates many imaginative people do not fare well as good hypnotic subjects.

5. One is unconscious and unaware in hypnosis - this is not true. The subject or client wont be able to respond if he/she is unconscious and unaware. In short hypnosis process will work if there is no connection between the hypnotist and client.
