Secondly, the internet is an evergrowing, everchanging environment. We as marketers must be constantly building on an already solid foundation and learning and applying new skills constantly. Just as new products and technology changes what we offer our clients, so to does the way in which we reach them and ask them to visit and do business with us. Web 2.0 is the current example of a changing 'traffic generation' update.

The Bottom Line?

So the bottom line, how to get traffic? Equip yourself with the skills you need and choose the ones you wish to focus on further....before you dive in to the physical side of creating your business. To do this "attend the class" to learn those skills hands on from an accomplished teacher. Rather than gathering pieces of information. And stay abreast of changes and update your skills in the same manner as above.

I had a rough day a couple of months back. My car wasn't running to well and that made me late for an appointment, which in turn kinda threw me 'out of whack' for the rest of the day. A series of small but frustrating events took place and I was frazzled.

I was on my way home and called in to the supermarket (not my local one) to buy some bread and milk. It really was the last place I wanted to be but it had to be done. When I got to the checkout the young lady said, "And how has your day been madam?" I wearily replied that I had had better. Too which she replied, "Are you on your way home then?" "Yes", I said "thank goodness". She leaned a little closer, as if to share a secret, and said, "I'll tell you the best remedy I've ever been given...go home, run a nice hot bath, grab a glass of your favourite drop and when you go into that bathroom..lock the door!" She was smiling enthusiastically now and then she said..."Repeat three times, out loud, It's all about me! Do not leave the bathroom for half an hour! It always works for me."

I thanked her for the advice and realised that 5 minutes later, when I reached my car, I still had a smile on my face! I felt better already, even without the remedy, (which I do recommend by the way!) And I remember thinking how refreshing it had been to interact with someone so pleasant, instead of the habitual, no eye contact, and hollow 'how are you?'

So what's my point? Getting traffic to your business doesn't end when they walk through the door or enter your website. You can spend all you want on PPC or optimise your pages to the hilt, but unless you treat your clients well when they do arrive, you can kiss the lifetime value of that customer goodbye!

Customers, like us, have good and bad days. When you have dealings with your customers, stop and think..What would make me happy in this situation? If you do this often enough you will find that you genuinely Do want to know how their day has been and how you can help them?

Treat everyone with this level of respect and you may not need to spend so much on PPC etc either. Why? You will have a long term and loyal customer who also becomes a volunteer rep for your company when they tell everyone they know about your product,and your excellent service (which outshines the rest!)
That's the best and most viral traffic there is. And it really doesn't cost more than a bit of effort!

Michael Cheney also runs a "news channel" called Cheneys Marketing News -CMN. This free site has a dozen or so videos that Michael has done and posted to YouTube where he answers marketing questions and talks of popular topics such as 'laying off the boss' and does interviews with other marketers and reviews some of their products.

Once you start receiving his CMN newsletter you will recieve a link to a new video usually every month. These ongoing videos are a good ongoing source of info nuggets to add to your solid foundation of traffic knowledge.

These free ones, while they do as I said, have some useful and interesting information, also tend to be reviews for other companies and their products. This to is helpful.
