Learn to Crochet

Crochet is a great craft to learn and so versatile.  From doilies to funky amigurami, clothes and household accessories - this is a craft with many applications.  It is not difficult to learn - there is a wealth of information available to help with your first steps with a hook!

Tips To Help Learn How To Crochet

  • Start with simple projects with little shaping. These needn't be boring - granny squares are very 'in' at the moment!!!
  • Remember - US crochet terms differ from those used elsewhere. For instance Single Crochet in the US is Double Crochet in the UK. The stitch is the same - the name is different.
  • Learn how to make the Single Crochet (US) stitch - most other stitches are a variation of this.
  • Experiment with different hook sizes and thickness of yarn - great effects can be had by trying different combinations.

A Great First Project

Crocheted Scarf using Chain Stitch

The first stitch you will learn in crochet is the Chain Stitch. But what to do with it?

This scarf has been made using nothing other than lots of lengths of chain stitch which have been tied together to hold them in place. A couple of pompoms finish the scarf.

Working in different textured yarns brings a rich depth to the scarf.

People won't believe it is your first project!

For experienced crocheters this is a great way to use up some odds and ends of yarn.

Another great project for beginners

Egg Cozies

Egg cozies are another way to practice your crochet and make great gifts (particularly at Easter). They can be decorated or left plain. In fact when it comes to decoration why not let the imagination run wild!

They are also a good way to practice new stitches.

However best of all they are quick. In no time at all you can have produced your first crocheted project - well done! The internet is full of free patterns for egg cozies - or follow a link below!
