Book Review: All I Really Need to Know About Business I Learned at Microsoft

Ranked #11,647 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #414,213 overall

Say what you will about Microsoft - in fact, author Julie Bick says that same thing on page two of her book.  After working for the software mega-giant for five years, Julie has a few things to say about their business strategies.

If you are a business veteran, many of the things you learn in Julie's book will come as a big "duh!" statement. However, most business advice that we get sounds like a big "duh" statement, and unfortuately we get it just after we've royally screwed something up. The advice Julie gives, regardless of the fact that it's nearly 10 years old, is still solid and helps the reader stay grounded and focus on what is most important.

Businesses in 2006 love to make things more complicated that they really need to be. Small businesses go to extremes to find big-business marketing solutions, and big businesses go outside their own pool of qualified creative mindpower to find new solutions they believe are better.  The lessons Julie offers will remind readers of what is important so they can focus on the true levers of their business that move customers, products, and revenue.

Why buy the book?

This book is an easy read that gives you actionable advice from - let's face it - a giant in the business industry. Best yet, it wasn't written by a talking head; all the advice is from a been-there-done-that worked-in-the-trenches employee who wants to help you make the most of your situation.

When this was first formed, did a bunch of Execs sit around and toss around company name ideas? MiniSoft? Microscopic Squishy? Notsobig Marshmallow? ....or were there just a bunch of ideas that had nothing to do with the company name? ImgonnabeRICH? GeniusGates?
